trying to find a job out of state

I'm currently trying to move back to the great lakes area to be closer to my family but I'm looking for your some ideas on the best way about doing it.

Should I apply for jobs in that area and hope one wants to work with me (seems unlikely in current job climate)

or should I just pick up and move then worry about getting a job (hard do to current cash flow, or lack of if I quit my currrent job)

have any of you guys gone thru this and have any pointers that might help?
