Trying to figure out what outperforms the other E6850 c2d vs i5-520m

HI,

I have been doing a bit of research as to which one of these two processors out performs the other. Currently I have an E6850 c2d in my desktop and was wondering what mobile processors out perform it. For instance...

This site says...

the E6850 outperforms the i5-520m. But

This site tells a different story.

Not sure what I should be trusting. Any input would be great.

Thanks

Chad

The i5-520M mobile CPU should be better performing than desktop Core 2 E6850. I'd guess 15 percent in single thread and 25 percent in multi-threaded apps.

Wait what? Does not the first site say the E6850 outperforms the 520m. Am I reading something wrong?

Thanks

Chad

That first site's ranking doesn't make sense. The i5 is as fast in the majority of the benchmarks, and significantly faster in Prime; like twice as fast. I think the fact that the e6850 is missing a few benchmark results, throws things off on their automated ranking.

The i5-520m should be pretty much equal in performance to the core 2 duo. It has a clock speed disadvantage even with turbo mode, but it's faster clock per clock.

Sorry about that, I edited the original post.

Turbo mode on i5-520M is 2.66GHz with 2 cores and 2.93GHz with 1 core. Obviously there's no way the Core 2 can outperform the i5-520M in any situation. The 1 core Turbo mode is almost irrelevant for most cases FYI.

Clarkdale is faster clock for clock, but the E6850 still has a clock speed advantage even with counting turbo mode. They're honestly pretty comparable processors with the i5 being more power efficient while offering similar, and in some cases, better performance.

Don't forget that it's really hard to compare desktops with notebooks, different hdd/memory/gpu/etc, usually in favor of a decent desktop.
