I am wanting to get my dad a decent bottle of scotch for Christmas and was curious what brand I should go for and if there is a specific age to get. Going for the $100-150 range. I have heard good things about the Glenfiddich ancient reserve 18 year old scotch. Any recommendations?

The local grocery store around here has a great deal on a 1.75L plastic bottle of generic scotch. Just get him 100-150 bucks worth of those babies...You know what they say, the more the merrier! :D

Naah... I want to get him a nice single malt scotch. Also I live in BC Canada so all the higher end liquor comes from government liquor stores.

Wow - Scotch isexpensive up there.

What does he like? Islays are a very distinctive taste - one of the love them or hate them whiskys. If you are not sure I would avoid Lagavulin, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Caol Ila, Laphroig etc. If he likes them how about the Caol Ila Cask Strength?

Of the rest - perhaps the 15YO Macallan? but really it depends on what he likes. What does he normally drink?

Thats EXACTLY what i was going to suggest. The MacAllan is great too, but next to that port wood Balvenie? No contest.

He normally drinks Glenfiddich 12 year old scotch, I think his family is from around there... the Macallan is good? The Balvenie portwood isn't available at the local store, at least not in the 21 year old version so is there another choice from whats listed there that would be good? Anything in other price ranges? I could always get 2 if there is a nice bottle in a lower range...

I see a lot of good reccomendations already. I like Dalwhinnie and Glenmorangie myself.
Here is a link that might help. http://www.scotchwhisky.net/index.html

Wow - Scotch is expensive up there.

actually, ALL booze is expensive....a 26oz bottle of Finlandia vodka is about 22$. most garden variety liquors are at about that price range. a 2-litre bottle of cider goes for 8-10$, and a 6er of cheap beer about the same

Actually, I've never had the Balvenie Portwood, I've heard very good things about it, though. I'm saving it as a present to myself for promotion to Senior Associate in about 18 months. :p

But the Macallan's good. Just bought the Glenlivet 15YO French Oak, smoooooth.

If you have $100-150 to spend, I'd say get the Glenlivet 15YO French Oak and the Balvenie Doublewood. Here in WA state that would run you about $90.

So the Glenlivet 15 yo French Oak Reserve and the Balvenie Doublewood would be the best two scotches to get? Is the 1991 Balvenie Port Wood any good? Or should I just stick with the doublewood?

I'm no expert on scotch, but I really like the Balvenie Doublewood.
