Trying to figure out keyboard shortcuts

I'm trying to use the keyboard shortcut in mail to mark messages as read or unread. I've been using OS X for about 3 years now and have never been able to figure out what the up and down arrow keys are. For example, in Mail you use "Up arrow" Command and U to mark a message as unread. Like I said, I can't figure out the first key. Any help is appreciated!

hehe i have issues with shortcut keys too. Need to label my keyboard i think

I didint know that crazy up arrow was shift but it does make sense now. Since on my keyboard shift has a big ass up arrow lol

What's interesting is that on foreign keyboards, where the words shift, control, and option have no meaning, they just put on the symbols.

You can also go into Keyboard preferences and then Modifier Keys, and they are labelled (except for the shift key) in there.
