Trying to figure out if this is compatible with my mobo or not

the thing is, he's not really that much of a "guru" with computers...he'd rather upgrade it then risk overclocking and ruining his comp

it doesnt take a "guru" to raise his FSB in bios and put on a memory divider. it takes half a brain and a few seconds. plus, it leaves you with a fatter wallet and some <<gasp>> gained knowledge.
 
He should give it a try, especially if it's a 2.4C. Those were known to do ~3.0-3.3 easily.

And yeah, it just takes a brain to OC--just don't do anything stupid (unless you bought a $50 AXP to fool around with/blow up for roffles) and you're fine.

do you know how fast his memory is? pc-3200?

your friend should be able to EASILY hit 3Ghz with that CPU.
