What in the world? How can a Windows critical update not pass a Windows XP verification test? There are five items that it won't let me install. I've tried installing them one at a time, but they all fail still. FYI, they are:

Critical Update for ADODB.stream (KB870669)
Update for Background Intelligence Transfer Service 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB840315, KB841873 and KB839645)

Thanks for your help.

I had this problem awhile ago getting direct X 8 of all things installed. It kept quitting and giving me that error. I have no idea what I did to fix it but have seen this before.

I guess I'm not sure which "version". I'm just using the factory default link to Windows Update that is in my Start > Programs menu

This sucks. Has me worried now.

You might want to try redirecting to V5 or V4 depending on what site your browser currently loads. When you go to Windows Update, check the address it's gone to to - at the start should be V4 or V5. Try changing it to whatever it's not and see whether you can update from there.

V4 is the current Windows Update page - V5 carries the usual updates and RC Service Pack 2 for Windows XP as far as I can tell.

I figured it out - for some reason I had Cryptography services turned off.

Thanks a lot though.

I don't know! =/

I recently used a services list (whether you need them on or not) from some fairly reknowned guy on the web. Blue Viper, or something. He probably warns you that you may need to turn it back on at some point, but I didn't recall that.
