I've been thinking of doing this upgrade for over a month now. I was all set to get the Acer AL2223Wd 22". My local Circuit City had it for the last few months but then I went to get it yesterday and it was gone. So I got home and checked the website and it seems they're getting in the newer model or atleast thats what I'm assuming it is. Acer X221WSD 22"The only thing is none of the CC have them in and when I called the 2 closest to me they didn't seem to have any idea of what I was talking about. I googled the item# and it seems most everything is in Japanese. So as of right now i'm set on ordering the AL2223Wd from Newegg on monday unless someone can tell me if the newer one from CC is going to be better and worth the wait. The only difference I can see is the contrast ratio is 1000:1 instead of 800:1. Any information would be appreciated, thanks.

The X221WSD seems so new that it is not even on the Acer Global site. Indeed, a Google search turns up mostly results in asian languages.

What I can also see on the Circuit City is that it has 2 DVI inputs. At least with the 2223WD, you know what you are buying and you have a bunch of positive reviews on NewEgg

There doesn't seem to be any new feature/spec in the X221WSD worth waiting for or paying $30 more.

The 2223 is more recent than the 2216 and also has HDCP. In fact, the 2216 was the first of the current wave of low-cost 22-inch widescreens. Only the latest revision of the 2216 has HDCP, so there is an element of uncertainty there. The 2223 is an updated model. I would not worry too much about the 16.2 M colors on the 2223 and the 16.7 M on the 2216, as the latter figure has always been dubious: TN panels are 6-bit and rely on dithering to increase the number of intermediate colors.

In all, I would guess the 2223 and 2216 are not far from being clones, one in Acer's Value Line, one in the Office line.

Well right now I need this new monitor ASAP as my wifes CRT expired yesterday. CompUSA and Circuit City both have the AL2216. So I could go get that tomorrow if I wanted. Plus I like the idea of getting it from a local place incase of dead pixels. But I don't like having to spend $50 more plus tax. I saw the AL2216 today was very impressed with it, plus i've read some good reviews but i've also read some good reviews on the 2223. I like the black and the controls on the AL2216 though.

Advice, don't look for cheapest. Monitor is thing that will last 3+yrs, and therefore difference of 50$ doesn't stand in such long period.

Checkout new Samsung 226BW and LG L226WT that have second generation 22" TN panels in them.

Thanks for the review. It pretty much backed up my thoughts on the monitor. I just checked the Circuit City website and they have the new Acer X221WSD in stock at my local Circuit City so i'm going to check that out today. I just wish I could get some reviews on it someplace.

CC also has that new Viewsonic that has the built-in iPOD dock for $300-$320. They had a sale last week on the Samsung 226BW which seems to be really popular in the 22" range. But ya it looks like the 22" TNs are getting much better in terms of viewing angles, as I checked out the 226BW and it was much better than the Dell E228WFP I played with for a few days.

Twisted Nematic. Its the panel tech used for almost all 22" panels. The knock on TN panels is poor viewing angles, poor color reproduction (6-bit color + dithering), poor panel uniformity, and heavy back light bleeding. The pros for TN panels are fast response times, low input lag, high contrast and price.

If the cons don't bother you and the pros are important, you should be happy with a TN panel. The 2nd gen 22" do seem a ton better with viewing angles, as BernardP said, but I couldn't really tell in terms of color accuracy or panel uniformity from the CC display since it was hooked into a generic VGA feed.

Well guys I just got back from Circuit City with the Acer X221WSD. link

They didn't have one on display but I talked with a few guys and told them I was sold on getting the AL2216WBD but wanted to check the 2 out side by side. So I asked what there return policy was and they said 14 days and 15% return policy. But since they did have this one on display they would wave the 15% if I brought it back. I got it home and started it up and so far i'm very impressed. The thing is huge but everything is very crisp and bright. So far i'm happy, but I gotta do some gaming on it before I decide forsure. I'm coming from a Viewsonic VX924 as well.

Just and update. Now i'm a little pi$$ed. If you look at the specs on the CC website it says. Contrast ratio: 1000:1 and DVI (Digital Video Interface): 2 I guess this just flew over my head because I didn't even think of checking when I hooked it up but this monitor does not have 2 DVI inputs (1 DVI and 1 VGA) and the CR is 800:1 not 1000:1 like the specs say on the site. Now the box gives the correct item number (X221WSD) and also backs up the real specs. I've been using this monitor for a few hours now and i'm very happy with it but I think this falls under false advertising. So now i'm not sure what do? Any advice?

If you are indeed very happy with it and don't need the dual DVI inputs, don't worry about the specs. If you return it simply because of that, you end up with something that you're not happy with.

I say give it a few days and then decide for sure if you want to keep it. You've got 14 days, right? Using it for a few days will allow time for the purchase to sink in and expose any flaws that might be a dealbreaker to you. Chances are you'll either come to realize its imperfections or grow to love it. :)

Well right now I love it. I'm just a little mad that the website wasn't correct. I'll give it this week and see if anything bothers me. I don't need the 2 DVI inputs so its not really bothering me.

The website was wrong...What a surprise! :p

2 DVI inputs on the website was probably a typo.

It just means that this monitor is even more like the 2216. You wanted the 2216...BeHardware has a favorable review of the 2216...and you like the X221...

Have you tested your new monitor for dead/stuck pixels? You can try the easy Dead Pixel Detector utility on This page

No dead/stuck pixels is another reason to keep it. You might not be so lucky with another one.

True, my Viewsonic had 3 dead pixels and they were in annoying spots.

even if he did have stuck or dead pixels, CC would replace it. I bought my 2216wbd at CC a couple months ago, it had 1 stuck pixel, and I took it back and exchanged it. they didn't charge me anything, and gave me no arguement. the replaced one was perfect.

Unless something happens to this or I find some annoying issue with it in the next 12 days i'm pretty sure i'm going to keep it. Currently i'm looking at it from the side and i'm not having any view angle issues. The only issue i've found is the blacklight bleeds a little from the bottom a little when the screen is black. But so did my Viewsonic so i'm not worried.
