Trying to decide which way to go...

Ok all. Im getting ready to buy a notebook. I cant seem to make up my mind about which way to go. Whether it be a Mac, or PC based, and whether it be a desktop replacement, or a light on the go notebook.

Here are my intentions. Im going back to college in January. I need it for that, and i need it to take with me for music, movies, etc. I dont really do anything spectacular on a notebook that would require certain software. Like i said, its for movies, music, multimedia, etc. Should I go with a desktop replacement? I dont want to skimp on power, but i also dont want one that is a rock.

Maybe you guys have a suggestion i should go with. I need it to last a long time, and i dont want to spend over a grand for one.

TIA

Well, what's your budget? Are you going to be carrying it around with you all day, or will the laptop spend most of its time sitting on a desk?

EDIT: So it seems I missed the budget bit. For longevity and price, I'd recommend either a Thinkpad R51, or a Z60m. Both have 15" screens and weigh about 6.5 pounds, are built like tanks, and should be very reliable. You should be able to get either configured reasonably well for about $1000. The Z60m would probably be the way to go, though, because it's a bit more multimedia oriented.

For something smaller, there's the Thinkpad Z60t, which you might be able to get close to $1000, and the HP dv1000, which is pretty cheap and is quite multi-media oriented. Both have 14" screens, and the Z60t weighs 4.5lbs, while the dv1000 is about a pound heavier.

An iBook is a good choice if you don't mind the smaller 12" screen.

It just occurred to me - does your school offer any type of student discount on laptops?

I'm usually a Dell guy, sometimes Acer or Asus. In this case based on info given I'd agree that an ibook is the way to go.
