Trying to decide on which mobo to choose...

Hello again.

Once again I find myself thinking of purchasing a new motherboard. The reason being is that I will be building a new rig for my boss at work, and I'll pass down my current mobo to her as part of that.

My mobo and CPU is the GigaByte 7DX (not the DX-R) and AMD 1.4ghz. Also 2 sticks of 256MB DDR PC2100 (crucial)

The 7DX has some really funky hybrid AMD/VIA chipset thing going on so i find myself needing both the 4-in-1's and some amd drivers that haven't been updated in a few years. I don't really like that. So I think i'll get the KT266 since it seems to be better now. In particular I'm looking at the A-Bit KR7A, as a recent roundup here said it was the best KT266 mobo. I also like that it has 4 DIMM slots, which is nice because I'd like to get another 512MB of ram and have that gig of ram i've always dreamed of. ;) I also like the 6th PCI slot instead of 5. I will NOT be overclocking, so I don't need the options that I hear the Iwill has over this one. Nor do I need any crappy onboard sound. I like basic stuff better, as less things can go wrong. :)

One thing I'm wondering about the KR7A, if I do get that one, is whether the non-raid (KR7A) is the same board as the rad (KR7A-R), as I don't need a raid. I got this GigaByte one after seeing the performance for its Raid variant, only later learning that this version is a lot older than the 7DX-R was at the time. I definately don't have any use for a RAID as I only have 1 HDD, but if the non-raid version is inferior I'll spend the extra money to get the suprior board.

So, in your opinion, should I go for the KR7A? or KR7A-R? The reason I'm a little weary of getting A-Bit is cause a week before I got the GigaByte I got a Abit KT7 and I had so many problems with that thing I had to return it. I'm hoping the KR7A won't be the same thing...

Thanks for any help guys :D

My current system rig is here

Get the newer version with ata 133 support. Do a fresh install of windows, starting with the video card only, one card at a time. With the right bios settings, you shouldn't have any problems. With the right memory timings, the board should run well.

I've heard the thing about installing w/ video card only then adding one by one before, but when I tried it in the past it seemed to make no difference, or worse, make things even funkier...

my main problems with win2k/xp (same problem on both os's) is that for some reason games like Half-Life and Quake3 have some major graphic problems. Its funky though because only one of my friends gets the exact same problem, and nobody else I know that runs xp or 2k does. theirs works just fine and dandy...

ugh...

but thanks for helping though :) i appreciate it
