trying to decide on a plasma TV

I'm moving into an apartment that's not going to give me alot of depth in the living room, so I'm unloading my 52" projection and going with a plasma TV that I can mount on the wall.

I'm looking at this tv at Sam's Club.

Is an EDTV going to do well for HD content or would it make a big difference to get a TV that can do 1080i natively?

Any other plasmas out there that give a better bang for the buck?

Why a plasma TV, though?

I just don't like the idea that they start going all funny with the color after a few years of usage. (I mean, yeah, you need to leave it running 24/7 for, like, 3 years to do it - but the color starts going all purple, then)

Me? I'd do an LCD TV if I was looking for one right now.

If those are the only two options then definitely HD.

1080P plasma should be available before too long as well, if you aren't in too big a hurry & have the cash you might want to wait.

thanks for the link. seems like a good site to do research.

NP. I would suggest to anyone who is about to buy a display device of any kind to check out avs.

Just have to be careful it's easy to get really depressed reading the "Let's compare screenshots from our new Qualias" threads.

I'm trying to do a 42" TV for < $2k. We're not all millionaires. ;)

the TV will be used for roughly 10 hours / week. I don't watch alot of TV, but I like a nice setup when I do decide to watch a movie or play some Halo. :)

Then come football season, it will see HD Steelers games.

Not in a real big hurry. I have a 27" CRT that will get me by. Not HD or widescreen, but it is flat glass.

What kind of a timeframe are they looking at for 1080p? Of course, those will probably be way out of my budget.

Can you even get an HD plasma under $2K? Not sure you can, ED is easy though.

I would definitely spend the extra for HD if you can, but with a $2K budget don't bother waiting for 1080P.

Also the "wearing out" of plasma is VASTLY over stated, CRT's do the EXACT same thing. Plus current plasmas have extremely long 1/2 life ratings.

Ah, 42" is pretty big for LCD. You can get 30" or so for around that budget, but....42 is a little much.

You...uhhh...SURE you need that big a screen? If the apartment you are moving to is small enough that a projection TV wouldn't realistically fit....

Well, I'm just saying, I'm thinking you'd find sitting 3' away from a 42" display will be a BIT uncomfortable.

BenQ has a 37" LCD TV with full 1920x1080 resolution and its selling for right about $2K, so you might check it out.

I have ~11' between walls. The problem is that my projection TV chews up 2-3 of those feet. Factor in that sitting in a couch takes up 1-2' from that wall, there's only, at best, 8-9 feet distance from my 52" ..... just not far enough away. The plasma frees up those 2-3' and it's a little smaller. Surface area is much smaller given that my projection is 4:3

Lots of good info on avsforum. clearing up the edtv vs. hdtv thing

I own a 42" ed plasma and I don't regret the purchase one bit. After 2.5 years of use and abuse it still looks great and HD looks excellent. LCD's blacks still aren't black enough and I have yet to see a DLP set that doesn't look pixelated and crappy.

I have it hooked up to my media center PC at 1280x720 and I can read web pages with a little effort, gaming is a blast and everything I play looks great. I would like an HD set for text and PC use but the ED is liveable.

If it's all you can afford I say you won't be disappointed. If you plan on using it with a PC I would spring for an HD plasma.
