Hi ya all...been out of theloop for a while, and I'm trying to help a friend put togehter his first DIY PC...his needs are fairly minimal, just basic stuff like multitasking, maybe a small amount of programming but nothing serious...no demanding 3D Gaming needs...basically, I'm justlooking to put together a system with budget level CPU, gobs of RAM, probably a fast hard drive, and stability...I don't want him to end up having a lot of trouble...

This is why I am writing...reading ATs IGP chronicles has left me very desiring as it seems like AT hadnothing but trouble with several of the IGP chipsets for Intel CPUs, including the G45 and the newer GeForce 9400. I know Intel's CPUs are generally faster than the Phenom's but it seems that AMD has the better & more stable platforms (like 780G and GeForce 8300) and I just don't want my friend to be having a lot of driver problems and stuff like that. So, any thoughts would be appreciated...hoping to stay below $125-150 for both the motherboard & CPU...I have a feeling Phenom's may be better bang for buck anyway in this price range as the only C2Dsin this price range are the lowly 7300...anyways, any thoughts on this dillema would be appreciated.

Hi,

for a bargain IGP system, AMD is hard to beat.

One of these CPUS, lower power (45w) are the two on the right: run cool, quiet, efficient, worth the extra few bucks I think, save on electricity costs in the long run:

One of these mobos:

Note: the nVidia chipset is brand new, and, for stability, I think it might be best to go with the tried and true AMD 780g....has been out for a while, bugs no doubt found and fixed, whereas the new Nvidia chipset is bound to has some early release issues.

I wouldn't consider an e7300 'lowly' ...

You could snag a Biostar 790gx / X2 7750 combo for $155 or a Gigabyte 780g / X2 4850e combo for around $130.

It's a little pricey but an e5200 / Gigabyte Geforce 9400 is around $200.
