Which has better graphics, the 7150 chip set with Intel processor or 690G chip set with AMD processor?

AMD
Foxconn 690G w/ Bisbane 4000+ for combined price of $117

Intel
eVga 7150 w/ E2140 for combined price of $165
or
eVga 7050 w/ E2140 for combined price of $145

no rebates has been applied.

Office pc with bus. owner likely to play some games.

Prefer cooler running, too.

Thanks.

If he really want to be able to play basic games, just throw in a $50 card (check your local BB for the $45.99 PNY 7900GS, you might get lucky) which will completely blow away any IGP out there.

I'd go with this because the IGP shares the system RAM and IIRC the Intel Nvidia IGP chipsets only do single channel memory while the AMD AM2 solutions all do dual channel. More memory bandwidth is not a bad thing for IGP.

True that a typical $50 card is better than any IGP. However, any of the above solutions can be upgraded so why spend $50 extra unless the owner comes across a game that doesn't run smoothly. What if the guy/gal is a Starcraft afficionado? Or plays WCII? Heck, even WoW is playable on good IGP depending on resolution/settings.

I'm a fan of having an IGP for back-up and occasional 3+ monitor use. That said, I haven't seen an IGP from nVidia that I'd buy for the 775 socket: they all have just two RAM slots and single-channel RAM accessing -- a big "WTF?" to nVidia for these products. Intel IGP is pathetic, as I expect you know. AMD won't have their Quad-core CPUs shaken-out for several months, which eliminates them from -my- current interest.

So, if Quad-Core's of near-term interest, ignore the IGP and drop a card into a decent 775 board.

Otherwise, I'd go with IGP on an AMD-CPU board -- I'm a sucker for HDMI ports [often using my 1080P 42" TV] and like the BIOSTAR TForce TF7050-M2 (nVidia 7050), but the GIGABYTE GA-MA69GM-S2H (AMD 690G) looks good if you prefer the AMD chipset. Which [7050 vs 690G] is "better"? 'Can't really say... sorry.

i have had both the nvidia 7050(biostar) and amd 690G gigabyte board. i personally like the 690G. everything is integrated into the board. onboard audio/toslink. hdmi, dvi, vga, component out and also firewire.. great stability and overclocking.. great video but thats pretty much similar to 7050

Would you perhaps have tried to undervolt a X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz 65W on the Gigabyte 690g mobo?

The fastest IGP at the moment may be in the Abit Fatal1ty F-I90HD Micro ATX.
Radeon Xpress 1250
ATI Tool can overclock this IGP (corespeed, but not shared system memory)

I have one on the bench right now. Nice features, hdmi and vga out, 1080p, everything except firewire. Does about 340 fsb on IGP, 370+ with a PCI-e card. Easy to O/C a 9x or 10x Celeron 4x0, Pentium E21x0, Conroe whatever, to 3 or 3.5 GHz.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_690_chipset_series

"Intel counterpart of the 690G chipset [13], supports all of 690G features and Intel processors, codenamed RS600 [14], replaced the HyperTransport controller with QDR FSB controller together with DDR2 memory controller on the Northbridge. IGP ran at 500 MHz clock frequency instead of 400 MHz in other 690 chipset counterparts."
