Question Trying to decide AMD vs Intel and how long to wait.

So I have a 10 year old computer for the most part and I am ready to upgrade. I have a few questions that I am debating. I finally was able to secure an order for a 4090 Gigabyte Aorus Master and will get it soon. The greatest irony maybe ever for me is that my 10 year old board may have the same PCIE transfer rate as a brand new board if I go the Intel route depending on my next question...

If I go with Raptor Lake, but only get PCIE 4.0 x 8 on the 4090 which is the same as PCIE 3.0 x 16 on my z77 board if I go with a 5.0 PCIE SSD which should be coming out this or next month. The other problem I have is I think I want a Seasonic Vertex power supply for the ATX 3.0 with built in support for the 12 cable. So lots of questions... I could just go with a Samsung 990 pro 2 TB, but they are sold out... Tomshardware has some promising reviews of the 5.0 phision controller based SSDs. I think unanswered questions I have are...

• Is 5.0 SSDs worth the wait for 1 or 2 months?
• Is AMD 3d Ryzen 7 worth the wait or is it a task scheduling nightmare?
• Is 4090 at all constrained by pcie 4.0 x 8? (according to gamers nexus the answer is basically no)
• Can I live without having a power supply with built in support for the next special cable.

I am thinking I will just wait as I think my 850 watt power supply can run the 4090 on the Z77 board. The major issue is if I have enough cables left in that 10 year old box to make it work.

Short answers:

Games aren't even taking advantage of PCIe 4.0 SSDs. You don't really need PCIe 5.0 SSD for at least a year or two. Even then, there might be a dozen games needing their speed, if we get lucky.

AM5 platform has better longevity. Best to get a Ryzen X3D CPU.

4090 is probably way too powerful for your needs and I bet that you would be happy with a Radeon 7900 XT or a 4070 Ti. But if you wanna go for 4090, sure. It shouldn't feel slow on PCIe 4.0 x8.

I think you want an ATX 3.0 PSU for longevity reasons? I guess I can understand that need.

So yes, go ahead and see if the 4090 can work with your current PC. Shouldn't hurt to try if you do everything right (don't bend cables going into the GPU connectors!)

Windows 11 will support scheduling for the 7900X3D and 7950X3D eventually. AMD and MS will be working on it but it won't be ready at release time from what I have been reading. The 7800X3D shouldn't have any scheduling problems on Windows 10 or 11
