Trying to center Linux screen (modeline war)

My X displays slightly out of center (a little bit to the right side). When I run the "xf86cfg", I am able to center the screen, changing the modeline. I choose to write and save the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, but when I quit X and start it again, the screen returns to the original uncentered position.

What is happening? Aren't my configs being saved? (Sure not, your idiot...)
What can I do to center it definetely?

heh, I've always dealth with this by fiddling with my monitor controls :0) However my guess would be that you might not be editing the correct copy of XF86Config, most likely there is a personal copy in your home directory. I've also never seen the file with a '-4' at the end either...

The 4 might have been danielshoes letting us know that this is xf86 v4. When I ran xf86cfg on my OpenBSD box it saved the xf86config file in the /root directort (ran it as root). See if there is a newer file in root's home dir. I have been thinking about going back to v3.3.6 (Matrox card so I can do this easily) because XF86Setup was much better than xf86cfg.

I know that my monitor controls allow me to center the screen. But if I do it, when I'll switch back to WinMe/Win2k, the screen will be uncentered...

I know that this center screen configuration has something to do with "modeline" settings in XF86Config (or XF86Config-4? I don't know now...). I would appreciate if somebody could explain something about this "modeline" and which of the XF86Configs is the correct to be eddited.

My solution was to run linux at a different resolution from windows, b/c the monitor stores different settings for each resolution + refresh rate. I couldn't get it to work with both linux & win using same settings.

In my case it certainly has nothing to do with video resolutions and refresh rate. I run it fine under 800x600 16 bits.

It is just a modeline problem (the problem is to center the screen, not to set resolutions). MGMorden sent me a private message with some good comments. I will try to follow that and see what happens...

Anyway, any help is welcome!
