If it really is a disc image, rename it .iso and try Nero again. If you still get the error, it is not a CD or DVD image. Remember to use the Recorder, Burn Image option.

If you downloaded the img (around 2.5GB), it is standard DVD format. You need a DVD burner. Open Nero Burning ROM, clear the startup wizard, click Recorder on the menu. The select Burn Image. Select the image file and make sure that the left uppermost dropdown has DVD selected and not CD. That should do it.

Strange it came as an IMG. The MS downloader allows drops mine in as ISO files.

If it doesn't work, try imgburn. Free program and I've never encountered any issues. If it still refuses to burn, I suspect your image is corrupted.

It's my understanding that Microsoft's "Img" file IS an ISO file. If you want, you can just rename it ".iso" and burn it with any common disk burning software.

Here's a tragic story from a UseNet post:

"I fought in VietNam. My best friend was injured severely. I had to
inform his wife. His wife later died of a deadly "woman's disease", but I
was asked to pass along her wisdom to you. Her last words were: "Software
Dude, an 'img' file is the same as an ISO file. Just rename the file with an
ISO extension and then you can use any freeware burner software [including
the one mentioned above] to burn to CD-R."

i tried to the change the extension to.iso and burn the dvd and got the following error message from nero

"sorry, your compilation cannot be written on this kind of disc. please insert a disc of the correct type or modify the settings of your compilation to make it compatible with the current disk.

disc required for the compilation: ML Disk
Disc type in the recorder: DVD+R

what is an ML disk?
is it a multilayer disk, if it is , why cant i burn the image on a regular singl layer dvd?

what is an ML disk?

Multi-Layer, maybe? Is it a dual-layer image (>4.7GB)?

I never use Nero Express to burn image files. I always open up the entire Nero Burning ROM, "x" out of the startup screen. Navigate to the menu Record-->Burn Image, select the file and burn. I'm going off memory here.

A lot of people use nero. I don't know why.

I think Nero was once a great burning app and is now garbage.

I know a lot of people out there will take issue with me saying that, but I don't care. I used to use Nero until it started trying to be an all-encompassing media center with resident agents and other crummy stuff.

all-encompassing media center with resident agents and other crummy stuff, what is that, sounds more like resident evil :)

hey Dunbar, to open the entire nero burning ROM, does one need to have nero installed?

I'm pretty sure .img files are usually accompanied by .ccd and .sub files. It's a CloneCD image.

It could be something else, however.

I'm still using Nero 6.6.1.4 and many would agree that it is the best version of Nero. Nero 7 is a load of bloatware and unfortunately it is the only generation of Nero that works on Vista.
