APR% doesnt matter much, cause i plan to pay it all off. Master card sent me a letter for their platinum mastercard saying that I was pre-approved. What company offers the best rewards/customer service and all that good stuff?

If you're trying to build credit you likely are going to have problems getting the better cards with all the awards, etc.

Technically, any card should do. Just don't pay a fee to have the "privilege" of holding the card. Some people will tell you that certain creditors do look at banks like Chase, MBNA, etc. with higher prestige and thus favor those consumers over those that hold a bunch of Capital One and Orchard accounts, but I don't think that's a founded analysis.

My favorite bank is MBNA. Had nothing but great service. I have the World Points card.

I have Chase now and the customer service is quite good. If you just want to built credit, get any credit card with no annual fee and just pay it off every month. If you end up carrying a balance, make every payment on time or they will jack your interest rate up.

What methods of paying your balance are available for any of these credit card companies?

Rewards/perks are more important to me than limit.

For example my Citi's limit is only $6200 but I use it a lot more than my Chase with limit of $10k.
  • 5% cash back on purchases at supermarkets, drugstores and gas stations
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • $5 cash back for each balance transfer of at least $1,500
  • Access to Citi® Identity Theft Solutions
  • 0% APR on new balance transfers for first 12 months
  • No annual fee

Wow. I'll have to check on my First National card and see what exactly I get from it..

Thanks. I don't see why everyone recommends AMEX blue. Bottom line it SUCKS. Citi Dividend Platinum Select owns them all. If you want AMEX, get the Costco AMEX card (TrueEarnings)

Fixed.

I love eating out and earning a generous 3% rebate :)

Thank you. Good choice. What does Chase Perfect give you? I use my Citi + AMEX Costco and it's great =)

I never could understand the Amex Blue fanboi's. If it still offered BVG and Private Payments, then I'd get one.
I prefer getting 5% cash back at gas/grocery stores/drug stores.

I'm not sure what Chase PerfectCard offers these days. IIRC they used to offer 3% for gas but they may have raised it since then. My Chase PerfectCard is sitting at home and hasn't seen any action in a while.

My primary credit cards, in no particular order are:
  • CitiBank Dividend Platinum Select
  • Amex CostCo TrueEarnings
  • MBNA Schwab - I'll keep using until I earn 5,000 points = $50 then I'll stop using it

This, actually, is very true.

HOWEVER, I recommend checking out Providian Credit Cards. I hink they were jut bought by a larger company, btw) Anyway, this card has a nice feature in that it will update your FICO score and show it to you online when you log into your account. For someone with no credit, or trying to repair credi, or even just a consumer that wants to stay informed, this is a really nice feature.

That would be WAMU who now owns Providian.

i use the chase perfect for all my purchases that don't fall into the gas/grocery/drugstore category. the reason i like it is that the 1% rebate is applied directly to the next statement, as opposed to accruing, like the citi dividend. here are my cards:

citi shell mc: all shell gas purchases 5% rebate applied directly to next statment
citi dividend mc: all other gas purchases besides shell, all groceries and drugstore as well, 5% rebate to be accrued
chase perfect mc: all other purchases, 1% rebate applied directly to next statement

now i want to look into this amex costco thing with 3% rebate for eating out. how much is a membership to costco?

Bank of America is HORRIBLE. Their fee schedules are thru the roof. Prime + 27+% if you go over your limit twice in a year or default once. That'll give you a nice 33+% rate if you ever screw up or get in a bind, which college folk are notorious for doing.

I recommend a card from Citi. I have 5 credit cards currently and my Citi Simplicity is by far the best.
