Trying to be proactive. Buy Crucial DDR now, BEFORE prices go up? I don't have a DDR rig...yet.

This just occurred to me. I will be building a DDR rig later this year. I've heard that memory prices will be going up. Right now, Crucial PC2100 is $45 for a 256mb stick. I could get 512megs of the stuff shipped for $100. That's a good deal. What do you think? Get it now and let it sit all nice and safe in it's comfy foam packaging until December or later, or wait and roll the dice on prices going up?

I`m in the same boat as you going DDR in October,so am keeping a close watch on Crucial memory prices, the thing is they could get cheaper or even go up then back down again.I`m going to wait and if I see prices starting to go up ,then I will buy.

Kyguy, thanks for the compliment on my sig! ;) I used to have a different sig, but it was kind of the same message. I think this one is "kewler"

Mem,
Hey bud, good morning. I can see your point. We all hate to pay $245 for a videocard and then have it be $120 a few months later. me\<--looks at self in mirror!

My main worry isn't that it'll go up like $5 b/t today and tomorrow, but that one day it skyrockets back up to what it used to. What was that, like $200 for a 128mb stick? Ouchee.

I don't think we are going to see a drastic increase in RAM any time soon. There was a shortage a little while back so that the companies producing it were not able to keep up with demand, but with the slow down in computer sales and production being as high as it is, it probably won't be doing that again for a while, but you never can tell for sure. I thought about making some purchases for a future build, but I always have a hard time convincing my wife that it's justified. Maybe you don't have that problem though...

Who the heck knows? $100 for 512mb is a good price, but in a couple of months it could be $70 or $150. The current price trend is down, so if you don't need it right now you might want to wait either for an uptick or until you actually need it. Or you could buy 1 stick and wait on the other one (crucial ships for free). I wouldn't stress about how you could best save 5 or 10 bucks. It's not worth it.

it may go down... but i purchased 256bm of pc2100 for 47.50 (includes shipping and sales tax) cuz they had a deal on free shipping. in total this saved me 15-20 bucks on all my purchases because i bought it separately from my other stuff. in my opinion, buy it

With the economy the way it is (well more like fear), and with a surplus, prices will stay low and continue to drop. We're what 3 months from october. I highly doubt that the prices will go up that much. A good friend of mine sells memory to Ingram Micro. I pick up pieces from them at cost and they're doing well still but not as well as they used to. Companies are scaling back their profit margins these days. :D Better for us right?

Well I think I'm gonna have to go and buy some RAM from Crucial now. :)

Thanks for the great replies. I dunno....flip a coin, I guess. Argh. If I already owned a 133FSB TBird, I'd just go ahead and do it now, but I'm still at the 100FSB, old style TBird. Isn't this sad (but in a good way); we call year-old technology "old" Ah, I love this hobby!
