trying to up some mem on my gf's HP pavilion desktop
comes with Cely 800mhz 128mb ram
it's got some matx no name(can't find) mobo with two ram slots
has 2 sticks of single sided 64mb rams
I put one stick of duable sided 256mb pc133 ram in it, it boots with mem error beeps
I put one 256mb stick and one 64mb stick, it boots but does not detect 256mb stick, only runs as 64mb...
what could I do here?

update bios. some older mbs only support 256mb total system mem. fixes un later bios patches.

my celly 466 only supported 256mb until i updated to falcon bios 1.11( find at hp website). now it supports 512mb.

On older, name brand systems such as this I always purchase memory from Kingston or Crucial using their memory selector. They can be very picky in regards to single vs. double sided, compatibility with other sticks etc. You're guaranteed the memory will work this way.

I'm guessing you have an LX or BX based system and it prolly doesn't like high density double sided memory, as Boomerang mentioned I'd suggest using Crucial or Kingstons memory selector to find out what will work w/ your system.

double sided worked fine on my 440bx/zx(according to cpu-z)440bx according to hp.com system. just use 256mb ram and take out the 64mb. see if that works.

The PC133 is probably "high-density", which the memory-controller on that old system's chipset doesn't support. Go find some "low-density PC100", that's what you need. Two double-sided DIMMs will probably work, as long as they are "low-density".

OTOH, perhaps the 256MB DIMM is just faulty to begin with, that's a small possibility, but the other reason is far more likely.
