Trying to add a modem to Mandrake 8.0?

I am trying to add a hardware modem to my Linux Mandrake 8.0 installation and I can't seem to get it to work....

When I click on the connect button I get the message that says" Modem Ready" and then it states "Initializing Modem" and it freezes right there!

I am just starting to learn Linux and have no idea on where to go from here. The modem that I am using is a Mutlti-Tech Systems MT5634ZPX. It states on their web site that this modem is Linux capatible.

Anyone have any ideas?
