dell 400sc
never ever had problems like this, have installed tons of cd and hard drives

went out and purchased a new 60gb maxtor.

primary ide channel
-system 80gb hd
-*Added new 60gb hd

secondary ide channel
-cdr
-dell lite-on cdrom

the bios recognizes the new hard drive, but windows will not let me access it unless it's set as the secondary master. i've tried csel, i've tried master/slave, i've tried using different ide cables, i just don't know what to do. the drive works fine, it appears in the cmos under auto, but windows will not let it be the primary channel slave.

the drive has been partitioned and i have used it in win2k as secondary master.

please help!

Try going into your control panel, administrative tools, computer management, storage, disk management.

already tried, disk does not show up. disk does not show up anywhere in windows unless it's set as the secondary master.

Does your Dell have the single page BIOS? If so try this fix from Dageejerus on the Dell forum:

If you have a problem with IDE Devices detecting in the Dell Single Page BIOS, try the reset procedure listed below:
Boot to system setup. Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, Num Lock,
Press ALT+E then ALT+F then ALT+B
IDE devices should redetect on reboot.

just as i suspected, didn't do anything, since the bios could already see the drive.

i have screenshots of the jumpers and everything, just in case anyone doesn't believe me

i'm starting to think maybe it's just my 2k install. i'll format to xp and see what happens.

Rygo,

Hold the train...

Is your primary drive a Western Digital?
If so, you need to re-jumper it to allow a slave on the same channel.

BTW, welcome to the Forums. :)
