Trying out my P3-700 at 750Mhz

Just wanted know what constitutes "safe over-clocking" for my PC. I have used Abit's Soft Menu set up to overclock my CPU to 750 Mhz and things seem to work fine.

Here's what a knowledgeable friend advised:
1. Should not over-clock by more than 15% of original speed
2. When encountering problems, faults are often attributed to Video Card or RAM's ability to "keep up". Likewise, it could also "fry" both items in dire circumstances.
3. I should install additional fans on my ATX unit, especially for the pentium

Not into hard-core tweaking so if any of you could spare some "conservative" insights, would be greatly appreciated.

In general, Intel processors are rather cool and do not need that much heavy cooling. It is usually not necessary to install additional fans, unless you have problems with air circulation.

A large number of Pentium III 700s made it relatively easily to 933MHz (7 x 133). This speed keeps all the peripherals in spec (unless you are running a BX chipset based motherboard, in which case the AGP will be running at 89MHz).

You are unlikely to fry the RAM, but make sure that you have PC133 SDRAM to guarantee operation at higher speeds.

That's very subjective, but a bit of research will tell you what most processors at a given speed have a good chance of getting to.

#1 don't worry - p3-700 is basically he same chip as a p3-1Gig... my 700 has been running @ 933 for over a year with just a golden orb ($10 HSF) - that's a 33% overclock... i bumped it up to 1.8v for more stability in games but it will run fine otherwise at 1.75v... my temps are 32°C at idle and 43°C at load...

#2 i have never known or heard of anyone "frying" anything but their CPU when overclocking - and even that is extremely rare - i doubt it's even possible to do that to RAM/video card...

#3 as for extra fans, up to you - depends on how warm the room already is... everyone should have an intake fan and the PS fan blowing out... more than that isn't really necessary, but some ppl like to anyway (including me)

#4 your friend probably isn't as knowledgeable as you think... whenever you have questions run searches on this board...

I'm also running a (cB0 stepped) P3 700@933, though I keep my voltage at 1.7v (same as the stock 933).

I'm running a Golden Orb as well; it's cheap, looks good, and cools fine for any P3 around 1Ghz or so.

Edit: Btw, I'm running an Abit VH6, so I have a 133mhz bus (so I'm only overclocking my processor, not my PCI and AGP cards as well); if you're running a BX board, your AGP and PCI cards may not like that much of an overclock.
