Trying out Knoppix

Well, admittedly, I don't have much Linux experience, so I thought Knoppix looked good as a "no commitment" sort of thing.

And I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised, since everything is all there and set up for you (well, nearly everything).

No installation, minimal configuring to get on-line...

The only thing I am bummed out about is no Audigy support....🙁

The SuSE live eval cd might have support for it, but I cant guarentee anything since Ive never tried it. Glad to hear you're having some good experiences with knoppix. 🙂

I have been playing w/ Knoppix as well, using now to write this I may add, and have not found support for the Audigy. There is a sound card detection tool in the Knoppix folder in the KDE menue, but alas it do not support the Audigy. As far as I can tell OSS supports the Audigy, but it is not free so it cannot be included on the CD. Also I was unsuccessful at installing OSS as some of the setup files are read-only due to the location on the CD. I bet that someone a little more versed in Linux than myself could find a way to install OSS to get Audigy support, but for now that is way beyond my abilities.

I don't know. They have support for the Live (EMU10K1), so I don't see why not support for for the EMU10K2.

I tried to load the drivers for the EMU10K1, but obviously it didn't like it. Oh well.

yeah i burned knoppix on cd for my not-so-good-with-computers friend, and he really liked it. its impressive to see that you can actually create a useful linux desktop for people who are willing to give up the ability (problem?) of being able to install any ol' app from download.com.

then again it furthers my point that gnome and kde are just copying windows (and mac os).

ADMIT IT PEOPLE!!!

😀

They == volunteers. Support is being worked on, but without help from Creative Labs you can't expect them to be released as soon as the Windows drivers. I have heard there's partial support in the Alsa CVS builds so it shouldn't be long before there's decent basic support.

They have to, that's what the people scream they want. Of course once you get acquainted with Linux you realize that WindowMaker is the only way to go =)

Well, Konqueror looks no different from IE, and as long as you are willing to go look for a few things, there should be no problems for any users trying out Knoppix.

So, score your first impressions. Say, out of 10?

8.5.

If it had Audigy support, mouse wheel, and a little bit more obvious about how to control volume in XMMS, probably 9.9.

The mouse wheel is just a X config or hardware detection issue, it'll probably be fixed in a future release of Knoppix.

The volume control thing is strange, xmms controls the volume just fine on my box with a SBLive. The only thing I can think of is that the user knoppix auto-logs you in as doesn't have write access to /dev/mixer.

Oh well.

It's only a matter of time then. Klaus Knopper seems fairly receptive to requests and he seems to update Knoppix every few days.

I give it an 8.5, maybe even a 9..Ive tried various Linux distros..never had much luck getting them to work...this seems to be much more easy for me!
