Over the past few weeks, I've spent quite some time trying to figure out what the best peer-to-peer file sharing program is. I've experimented with the latest versions of Kazaa Lite, Morpheus, eDonkey2000, Overnet, WinMX, Grokster, Blubster, Gnucelus, BearShare, and many, many others. The program which I finally found, DC++, is good enough that I was inspired to come post a message letting everyone know about this hidden gem.
DC++ is an open-source alternative to NeoModus' DirectConnect. DC++ is superior in almost every way; however, if you want some background on the DC network you might want to check out NeoModus' page as well. The DC network functions somewhat like IRC... there are literally hundreds of hubs, each with its own rules (some require you to be sharing a minimum amount of data, others ban DC++ which is the only reason to use NeoModus' client). You can join one or more hubs, chat with other users, and search & download all the files available in those hubs. Most people are used to other file sharing programs, where it takes hours to get a download slot and then the speed is 2k/sec. On DC, I typically average 30 - 70k, and you can usually find a user with an open slot so you can start downloading right away.
There's a slight learning curve when you first start using the program, but I highly suggest that you stick with it... once you become proficient in searching for and downloading files, there's nothing you can't get off DC.
Hope this helps someone!

P.S. Even though this reads like a paid advertisement, I just want everyone to know that I'm in no way affiliated with anything at all... just a very satisfied user
