Anyone here have one? How stable are these? I just got one and i really do not trust (it's just 4 pieces of rope that keeps it on the car). How stable are these supposed to be?

never cared much for mine....every time i got to where I was going, one of those 4 straps had popped loose...not a very secure feeling...I always had to stop and tighten everyhing after going over rail road tracks...

i spent about $100 on mine, but there are probably better and worse ones out there...

have a yakima roof rack for my bike now!!! :)

never had a problem using mine on my station wagon, even at 75 MPH or more. haven't tried it on my sedan yet.

I bought one back in 1998 while I was in college. I think that I spent $30 on it at KMart. It isn't the most stable thing, but it has strapped on to every car that I've ever put it on (wagons, convertibles, coupes, sedans) and it has never let my bikes go. I use it quite a bit.

IMO they are OK for short trips around town, but I wouldn't trust one for any long distance trek.

I've had a couple of trunk racks, one of which i used to haul two MTB's from WI to Arkansas. The thing I learned is that you really have to learn how to stretch the straps tight, position the strap hooks so that they do not slide (and thus introducing slack to the straps), and secure the loose ends so that the strap can not wiggle backwards through the buckles. They are a pain to secure properly, and the ones I used always slightly creased the sheet metal with the top hooks.

I bought a thule one off craigslist a few weeks ago. It works, but i cannot see myself taking this on the highway at 75 mph. I may just be paranoid, but i do not want my bike to fall off in the middle of the highway and cause an accident. I would get a roof rack, but they cost a little too much.

saris bones will not fit my car :(
