A Canadian broadcaster explained why it cut Donald Trump's cameo from its airing of "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York." .
The edit sparked both praise and outrage on Twitter from users who perceived it as politically charged. The hashtag #DefundCBC trended on Twitter.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. confirmed the scene was edited out but said the cut was made before Trump became president.
In the scene, Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) walks through the Plaza Hotel – once owned by Trump, whom he asks for directions to a phone booth to contact his parents.
"As is often the case with feature films adapted for television, 'Home Alone 2' was edited for time. The scene with Donald Trump was one of several that were cut from the movie as none of them were integral to the plot," Chuck Thompson, head of CBC Public Affairs, said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY. "These edits were done in 2014 when we first acquired the film and before Mr. Trump was elected president."
The movie was broadcast multiple times this holiday season, including on Christmas Day.
The CBC version of the film caught the attention of Donald Trump Jr.,
who tweeted an article about the scene being cut.
He tweeted the clip from the film in full.
President Trump praised the movie during a videoconference call to overseas U.S. troops Tuesday
.
"It’s a big Christmas hit – one of the biggest," he said. "So it’s an honor to be involved in something like that, you always like to see success.”
