this sentence is funny. Like how many people are expecting to know such a thing? lmao.

The person I was responding too was putting forth the fact that MIRVs were being shelved as they were not needed any longer. So I was talking to someone who has some knowledge on the subject, certainly that wasn't you.

How many people expected to know? I'm not sure, but I am sure that anyone that works with nuclear targeting would know.

What are the advantages? I'd love to hear them as I cannot think of one. Serious.

Ballistic missile launches make everybody super nervous, a major reason why conventional ballistic weapons have never been seriously considered for deployment. Say North Korea used nerve agents against SK population centers and we want to retaliate we would almost certainly use aircraft to deliver a nuclear payload. Way too much risk that China would freak out seeing in inbound ballistic track and launch against the US.

A submarine would do the same with a nuclear armed Tomahawk Cruise Missile. They wouldn't even see it coming.

Actually the Tomahawk is one of the slowest, easiest to defend against cruise missiles currently fielded by any military on earth. The Joint Russian and Indian BrahMos is superior in nearly every possible metric besides warhead payload.

This conversation is quite juvenile regardless, considering the global implications of any use of Nuclear weapons by any nation regardless of delivery method. Both the US and Russia have plenty of Nuclear weapons, however the US arsenal is actually much more modern and capable. Although Russia has more total warheads, they have far fewer deliverable weapons and the weapons they do have tend to be inferior and older than their western counterparts.

Putin wants to modernize his weapon stocks, but current treaties prevent this. Solution: Get useful idiot American President to bloviate about nuclear weapons on twitter, pissing every one off and setting the stage for a questioning of all US nuclear polices and current treaties, then use this instability to get political motivation and justification for modernizing his own weapons.

This has the added benefit of both pissing off all US allies and making the US spend even more money modernizing its already very capable fleet of deliverable warheads.

Those were retired several years ago in keeping with the navy's gradual pullback from non strategic nuclear weapons. Putting into ports with them was always problematic and they were basically obsolete.

At the end of this Trump nuke fiasco the US will have fewer allies, Russia will have more influence, Russia will have a new fully-modernized fleet of weapons with US Parity (which they never had before), and the US will will be much poorer for having to spend money on new weapons that will likely be negotiated to be merely equal to what Russia will field.

If putin could clone himself and have that clone elected president you could not have a more useful pawn than Trump.

Retired can be undone... I've been retired from the game for a while and am somewhat not up to date.

We still have Mark 80 warheads ( the same as the Air Force uses on their ALCM Weapons ) and we still have submarine based ( VLS and TTL ) cruise missile platforms ....

Pulling into port is not a big deal anyway... Meh. We did it all the time with a full complement of ballistic missiles onboard.

Planes provide the option to cancel the mission or change target up to drop time. Granted the difference is just a few minutes but that may be important.

Yep. Russia has been transformed into a Capitalist paradise over the last 25 years. It's just a different way to describe the reality of their oligarchy. It's just a paradise for the Capitalists.

Nah, Putin has already castrated the oligarchs. They get to keep the money as long as they serve Putin. Russia is a mature fascist state now.

FYI: Brahmos and family are overated.

I just know that the oligarchs are obviously quite real. I'm sure they have their quarrels, but they obviously find a way with Putin. Everybody ends up on the same page.

That's obviously not true. If the treaty allows the US to modernize, which we are, then it's obviously OK for Russia as well. That's what Putin proposed.

Trump's remarks, otoh, mean whatever the listener wants to hear. Imagine that.
