If plants are closed either because of an outbreak or local govt mandate, employees qualify for unemployment. Employees are pressured to work in an unsafe environment.
Both in Nebraska and IA, the governors will deny unemployment benefits to those who will not work because they are afraid of contracting Covid.

They'll just deny any type of leave or unemployment to workers. So they can either go to work and die, or go broke and let their families starve. Trump sticking up for corporations over workers for the gazillionth time.

I never imagined Trump would be able to turn us into such a horrible shithole country in three years.

People in food processing of all kinds are essential workers, even if we haven't realized it up 'til now. Everything we buy at the grocer is packed & processed in some way or another. It's a whole food web with a lot of interdependent parts between the earth & our mouths. They're some of the people the rest of us need to have on the job. I'm sure that everybody involved other than maybe Trump now realizes we need to protect them to protect ourselves from food shortages, something that was unthinkable 3 months ago. There should be paid sick leave for them & working family members who quarantine with them and a bonus when they come back to work. The families of any who die should be compensated financially & social security survivor benefits expedited. They need temperature checks at shift change & breaks. They need PPE, frequent testing & strong tracing. They need our appreciation & support as much as all the other essential workers. I hope they get it. If the Admin needs to divert funding & resources to make it happen, just do it & we'll settle up down the road.

Tell the protestors in MI and elsewhere that there's plenty of work available at the meat processors. Bonuses include free haircuts and golf on your days off.

I do not suggest telling people to just stop eating until we are clear of the virus in two years.
Our food production must be maintained at all cost.

What we accomplish with the stay at home orders is to slow it down, shore up our woefully unprepared system to (hopefully) sustain an extended siege & save as many lives as possible. That's it. That's all we get.

And, when we think about, what's more important that the production & distribution of food? Nothing I can think of.
