We keep edging closer to an authoritarian state...

Trump threatens to remove news networks' press credentials over negative coverage

President Trump early Wednesday suggested taking away news networks' press credentials over "negative" coverage.

"The Fake News is working overtime. Just reported that, despite the tremendous success we are having with the economy & all things else, 91% of the Network News about me is negative (Fake)," Trump wrote on Twitter.

"Why do we work so hard in working with the media when it is corrupt? Take away credentials?"

Nice of Trump to spell out what he really thinks:

Stories that reflect badly on him = Fake News

Stories that are positive to him = True News

It's been noted by people who've covered him for a long time that he's used to controlling the narrative with the press but he's not in NYC gossip rags anymore, the old rules don't apply.

Of course fake news is a thing. It mostly originates from Trump and Russian trolls.
People seem to forget that Trump didn't start in about "fake news"until the stories were coming out about foreign entities running bogus negative stories about Clinton etc... during the election. He co-opted it to apply it to legitimate news sources.

Hey, it's the (South) American (banana dictator) way--shut down any news that says anything negative about you.

I doubt he'd be able to do it but the fact that he wants to is fucking sick. If Obama had said this about Fox, right-wingers would have been preparing their muskets for a charge on Washington. Add this to the growing list of same...

On top of everything, he's a fucking coward. He has no press conferences compared to past Presidents because he's terrified of getting asked questions about actual news items and things that he himself has said.

No argument here. I do wish he'd try, seriously. The courts have given him less than a free pass regarding immigration. Baldly attacking the First like this? The SCOTUS would hand him his ass and yes I know who's on it.

So does the white house have freedom to decide who gets press credentials based on any reasoning they choose? Or is there a first amendment problem here?

Isn't he too busy doing presidenting work to be watching TV and reading the news?

...lol, reading. It's been more or less confirmed by his closest staff that he actually can't read polysyllabic words.

It's going to be hard for his lawyers to claim he can't be deposed or prosecuted because he's too busy being President.

Don't blame this on "foreign entities".
Just look at Fox News. See how they have been impacting free news over the last 20 years.
It's Americans. It's your fellow-Americans that think and act like Nazis. It's your fellow Americans that have elected these people and put them in power.
Take some responsibility.

I think a major network should run a very positive story on Trump that is 100% made up. See if his head explodes.
