Russia good
Canada bad

So sayeth Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and several other world leaders, are not pulling any punches in the worldwide blowback to President Donald Trump's decision to put tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

In his statement announcing the tariffs on Thursday, May 31, Trump called the decision, among other things, "a satisfactory alternative means to address the threat to the national security."

Trudeau, in his own statement, called the idea that Canada, "America's most steadfast ally," be considered a national security threat to the United States "simply ridiculous" and "inconceivable."

US goods are already becoming less competitive due to the metals tariffs. Who could have foreseen this?

U.S. steel producers are benefiting from tariffs that make it more expensive for companies to buy the metals overseas. But some U.S. firms that use the metals to make everything from refrigeration parts to wheels say the tariffs have led to higher materials prices that are forcing them to charge more for their products. These firms say that in some cases, customers are turning to foreign suppliers that use cheaper, tariff-free metals to make the same products they can then export to the U.S. without bumping up against the new trade barriers.

Tool maker Stanley Black & Decker Inc. is considering replacing American suppliers with foreign ones for components of products made in the U.S.

“All options are open,” CEO Jim Loree said in an interview. “If that made sense in a given situation, there is a high probability we would pursue that.”

Lippert Components Inc., an Indiana maker of parts used to make RVs and boats, has begun importing some additional components made from steel and aluminum and is considering importing more.

“We’re finding alternative sources,” CEO Jason Lippert said. “There’s cheaper alternatives overseas.”

Jeffrey PizzoIa, chief operating officer of Ohio wheel maker Americana Development Inc., is among the manufacturers that have filed requests with the Trump administration to impose tariffs on finished goods imported from China. Attempts to pass on higher steel tariffs have helped push customers to take their business to Chinese suppliers, he said.

“We’re just asking the U.S. government to level the playing field,” Mr. PizzoIa said. “The tariffs are just pushing it perhaps to a breaking point for us.”

This is simply how the world economy is supposed to work (when it is run properly). There are low opportunity cost producers of steel and we are not one of them.

By producing stuff in the US just for the sake of "national security" we are basically spending part of our income to subsidize these steel producers. We are ALL poorer because of it (except steel producers in Trump country).

You know, it's funny that ITJSSG claimed "it's the economy, stupid" in another thread, and he's right to a degree... unfortunately for him, Trump's incompetence is going to hurt the economy and may help the Democrats in 2020, if not the mid-terms.

You missed EU and Mexico.

Funny thing is US has 2B steel trade surplus with Canada. That is going away I guess.

Do you think if we nuke Canada it will warm the place up enough that they stop sending us cold air?

China has retaliated by hurting swing states that voted for Trump with targeted tariffs of their own. This seems to be the general move of these countries. Attack the coalition necessary for putting him in there and getting this clown out from the world stage.

The odd part recently is Canadians seem to hold Americans responsible for the antics of Trump but, would be mortally offended if we held them all responsible for Trudeau.

He is using everything he has at his disposal as a negotiating technique because of the lack of progress on the NAFTA restructuring. However, it is absurd to call Canada a National Security Threat to get the talks going again.

Trump didn’t put Trump in office. Americans did. And are you really comparing the two?

whats wrong with trudeau?

Trudeau's been accused of a few things, such as not being as environmentally friendly as he claims (like offering support to the oil industry) and being too interested in things that merely look good rather than being good. With that said, he's a political genius next to Trump... and more importantly, he actually believes in this concept called "empathy" which Trump lacks.

Eeevil Leftist! We can't have that Commie crap creeping across the border. People might like it, and the Jerb Creators would suffer somehow. Can't have that.

Worse, he's a feminist.

To Trump, that'd be the greatest crime ever. Can't have women who tell him "no," after all. I'm half-expecting him to sever diplomatic ties if Trudeau brings up reproductive rights.

Side note: I always found it highly ironic that someone as bigoted as Blue_Max lives in Canada, because he's virtually surrounded by the compassion and diversity he hates so much. I picture him just screaming into the void every single day.
