Only in America could somebody be fined for flying the national flag.

I never understood this flag love us americans have. I love this country but the flag is jusdt an object to me. People who say they'll die for the flag kinda bug me.. Scene in movies of a soldier getting shot protecting the flag make me giggle and don't come of as patriotic to me. Does this date back to our pagan roots, when we worships objects as false idols?

It's symbolism it holds.

People burn the flag to show their distaste for the government. They don't burn the flag because they think it's ugly. But it's not just a symbol of the government behind it.

People fly the flag outside of their house to show they pride they have in our nation. But it's not just a symbol of pride.

Think of the lyrics to the National Anthem.

F.S.Key wrote about seeing the flag flying in the morning after a smoke and fire filled night, that symbolized to him that we were a strong nation, and even after all the destruction around it, the flag stood there, strong as ever, sending a message to the British that we weren't backing down and sending a message to the budding nation to stand tall.

It's all about the symbolism. If the flag means nothing to you, then you apparently don't know how fortunate you are to live in America.

a few years ago i remember reading where a guy was flying a normal flag.

he would put it up every day and take it down every night. Well a guy in the area complained. so the cops came and told him to take it down. he refused. So they started fining him for it.

it was in the local paper then one of the big national papers then on TV. never heard what happened with it though.

I think what people fail to realize here is that even though you own a home, you do not own all of the airspace above the home. I believe its something like 13 feet above your roofline. So by putting a flag pole that high it technically violate federal airspace. Get the stupid permid or make it shorter.

Is the roofline higher than the flag?

The flag as a symbol of the USA is not the point here. The point is that the Trump thinks he can do whatever he wants because he has a sh!t ton of cash. The city has a law and he is in violation of it. It's just like my city, they do not allow structures beyond a certain height here because they do not want to ruin the small town feel.

lol you should stick to your YAGT's.

not funny and he should stick to moronic YAGTs. does the pledge of allegiance ring a bell? the flag is not an idol it is a symbol. it symbolizes freedom, liberty, justice, and the american way.

that is why people would die for the flag. it is a symbol of home that many value more than themselves. thanks for laughing at the idea that has been a reality for many. <^>:|

Patriotism is out of style. Next time he should burn a huge flag and he'll get (yet another) key to the city.

It's sad but probably true.

It's surprising how different people/HOA's act.

When I grew up I lived on top of a hill and we had flew the American flag daily. I don't know the exact dimensions but it was very big and you could see it from miles in every direction.

I can't remember why but we didn't fly it and the fire dept came by and asked us why. They had been using it to tell the direction of the wind. So we flew the flag. I hated having to put it up everyday but that was one of my chores.

When we sold the house we sold the flags with it.

And you have the audacity to use the word freedom in your user name. You my friend have no idea what some Americans have gone through so you can have your freedom here in America. And yes, they did it for "that flag". You're an a**hole in my book. :)

They were going to steal that guy's house to pay for suing him? Talk about adding insult to injury.

yeap. but some good came out of the case. bush signed a law stating that a homeowners association can not stop you from putting up a flag.

It's not the federal government that is fining him for this, it is the city...

A flag is a serious matter because of the symbolism and meaning behind it, similiar to religious objects.

Flying such a huge flag is pretty obnoxious, even if it is an American flag. If it interferes with any important matter, then it should be removed. If people just has trivial grievances about seeing a huge flag everyday, then I say it shoulds tay put :p

P.S. I never recite the pledge of allegiance.

Whatever. Only in America would people suggest the someone should be exempt from normal building regulations just because what they're building is a flag.

BS. How much you care about the symbol is in no way connected to how much you care about the thing the symbol is representing. Just because they're tied together for you, doesn't mean you can assume your values are the same as eother peoples.

And FYI... When an enemy would capture a fort, they'd pull down the flag and put up their own. Key was excited not because he loved the flag so much, but because it meant the fort hadn't fallen. Again, it wasn't the symbol, but the reality it represented.

"You don't need a permit to put up the American flag," Trump said Tuesday. "The day you need a permit to put up the American flag, that will be a sad day for this country."

Funny... I'll bet he'd complain in a heart beat if someone put up a 300 foot flagpole and flew a gigantic flag outside his penthouse window, blocking his view :p

But, I really don't think there's anything wrong with his flag; just his arrogance about submitting the proper paperwork. Now, if he was denied a permit, then by all means, his arrogance would be acceptable (to me.)

Let's start a list of celebrities who can now safely crawl into a hole somewhere, never to be heard from again:

Britney Spears
Torell Owens
Donald Trump

Others shall follow, I'm sure.
