So I want to see what people think. What does the United States have to gain from this? What does Russia have to gain? Remember, the question is not what does Trump have to gain.

United States
I can't really see anything.

Russia
Weaken NATO
Get sanctions removed, specifically Magnitsky
Trump can give away more of our secrets. Remember, he already did it when Kislyak visited the Oval.
Russia entry back into the G7
Allow Putin to keep Crimea

You’re right I’d prefer to go back to MAD and proxy wars and such. Put in is an evil guy, Russia is a hostile natio, but like with NK maybe it’s time to try something different.

We are already part of a nuclear non proliferation treaty to which Russia is a signator.

What is there to gain from a summit for US? What proxy war are we in that Putin would agree to halt?

Be specific.

Oh lawd, an e-badass

We aren’t engaged in open proxy wars. I don’t want to go back to that either. Relations with Russia have been deteriorating for a while, I do t see that as a good thing.

Putin knew it would be this way when he seized Crimea & started a shooting war in the Donbass.

It's not the kind of behavior we should accept for the sake of better relations.

Not to mention that Syria is a proxy war of sorts.

Honestly I’m not sure Putin cares, he’s concerned with coming across as tough so his base worships him and keeps him in power (and alive). Sounds familiar actually.

Right on. Just give Vladi whatever he wants and everything will be great. Ice cream and puppies for everyone.

If he doesn't care there's no reason we should seek better relations.

You have to consider what side you are barking for.. where Flynn is right now, where Manafort is right now, all the indictments uptil now, what you know about the election from the public domain, what is still pouring out on a daily basis of news surrounding a russian election job... To ignore all this you might as well come out as flat earther... It is flat earther or collaborator.

Weird I’ve always kind of thought of them as the "give peace a chance" lot that thought the MIC was out of control and there was no chance of either side winnng the Cold War.

Yes it is. Progressives stand against violent dictators that mean us harm. Where's your spine?
I am guessing that certain right wing media is now pushing the Good Guy Putin idea full throttle.. I am afraid to go look..

Birds will survive humans. That's pretty much guaranteed now, and really all that matters.

Fuck all you, whatever. I'm out.

Birds!

We were all going along nicely until Putin chose military aggression as the means to his ends. Funny how that changed things. Then he doubled down helping to install Trump as President.

We should just accept that because... what, exactly?

This isn't the Cold War and Russia is not even in the same universe as the old USSR. Times have changed bunky. It's not 1970 any more.
