A bit surprised at how fast the concentration camps are starting.

As a note Dachau, the first Nazi concentration camp, also held about 30,000 inmates.
Not surprising at all. The Trump party has been projecting exactly this for years, and they literally wrote a 900 page manual on it. Governors were talking about helping donate land for these camps since last year. Why is anyone who pays attention to politics surprised by this? It shows the attention you are paying is lacking actual attention to reality.

Wasn't Cuba the site of what are considered to be the very first 'concentration camps'? (during the Spanish-Cuban war in the 19th century)

Maybe, did those come before or after the British-run camps during the Boer Wars?

I would be interested to hear how @Greenman justifies this. I’m confident he will.

You make a concentration camp in gitmo for one reason and one reason only - you do not want civil rights applying there.

Before (though not by much).

The term reconcentrados (reconcentration camps) was used for the first time for camps created by the Spanish Army in Cuba during the Ten Years’ War (1868–1878). Camps were established again during the Philippine-American War (1899–1902). At the same time, on another continent, the British used similar camps as a punitive tool in the Second Boer War (1899–1902) in South Africa. British command rounded up Boer women and children, as well as other Africans, and interned them in 34 tented camps with poor living conditions and scarce food rations, leading to high death rates.

[edit] those are the three early examples I remember always being cited in history class.

I think there have been many others though, especially in association with imperialism (the British again with other, black, Africans, the Germans with the Herero people...shamefully I forget the specifics...and maybe the Belgians in the Congo, just not sure if the actual term concentration camp was ever used in those contexts).

It’s heritage, not hate.

(you may not get that as you aren’t American. It’s what the south says to justify race based chattel slavery)

Might want to change title to first US concentration camp. For those of you who will chime in, "that's not what it is"

It’s not the first US concentration camp either - the Japanese camps were concentration camps.

It’s Trump’s first one.

So the really scary part of this is based on what he said it's indefinite detention since they don't trust their home countries to keep them.

This is really fucked up.

They have no intention of indefinitely detaining these people. There is probably literally a part in their playbook called "The Final Solution" for this. There can be little doubt that this is prelude to a mass atrocity.

Nice, looks like republicans and their voters are officially Nazis. Glad we can finally put that debate to rest.

Yeah but little Timmy might want to wear a dress and play on the girl's team.

Well, that's because you're a fucking monster that doesn't actually believe in human rights. But we already knew that.

Well, it's not you or me, so it's just fine.
