Oh there was nothing nefarious about Trump having those documents. It was just another grift where he saw opportunity to make money or leverage it in future legal battles. He's shallow. He has no grand master plans. It is all about money and saving his own ass. Just watch all the people he's going to throw under the bus once the DOJ actually starts getting serious.

From the NYT.

Trump Kept More Than 700 Pages of Classified Documents, Letter From National Archives Says

Sending a letter is way way way over the top. They should have sent a short informal note instead of creating all the drama with a letter. They are just trying to smear the good name of a totally honest man.

Yes, it was clear for years before he ran and was elected that he thought the president was a king. Really no clue about reality.
He didn't expect to win but it's his religion to "think big."

He's a publicity hound. The first time he saw his name in the newspaper he got a hardon. After he became well known as a real estate mogul, and particularly after The Apprentice (which rescued him from his Nth bankruptcy), some people would ask him if he was considering running for president and it grew from there. At first he just answered because he had to, something. After a while, well, the novelty of it started getting traction in some circles and it grew like a cancer and here we are.

Trumps filing claims are nonsensical, as usual. It’s the “throw shit to the wall and see what sticks” method, but done very obviously and poorly.

“I didn’t have any classified documents”
“They were planted by the FBI”
“I did have them, but they’re mine”
“They’re not mine, but I claim executive privilege”
“I declassified them, even though I didn’t tell anyone”
“It’s a witch hunt”

None of these are actual defenses. They are silly shit that a child or criminal would use as an excuse.

A quote from the filing:

"Once back in the dining room, one of the FBI agents said, “Thank you. You did not need to show us the storage room, but we appreciate it. Now it all makes sense.” Sure, Donny. That’s exactly what they said. lol

Leaving aside the self serving and heavily embellished narrative it's interesting to pay attention to what they seem particularly concerned about. The specified actions that they seem to want the court to take;

An independent third party established to go through the documents.
The FBI to stop looking through the documents until the third party is established.
A complete list of exactly what was taken (how they are supposed to do this without looking at them isn’t specified.)
Everything not listed on the warrant returned to Trump.

I don’t think the law works that way. A person suspected of a crime doesn’t get to negotiate how the evidence against them is handled, or ask for independent oversight. They essentially need a judge to agree that the FBI can’t be trusted. What color is the sky in their world?
