Trump declares himself the ‘chief law enforcement officer’ of America

The quicktime march to authoritarianism continues...

During his Senate impeachment trial, Democrats repeatedly asserted that President Trump is “not above the law.” But since his acquittal two weeks ago, analysts say, the president has taken a series of steps aimed at showing that, essentially, he is the law.
On Tuesday, Trump granted clemency to a clutch of political allies, circumventing the usual Justice Department process. The pardons and commutations followed Trump’s moves to punish witnesses in his impeachment trial, publicly intervene in a pending legal case to urge leniency for a friend, attack a federal judge, accuse a juror of bias and threaten to sue his own government for investigating him.

Trump defended his actions, saying he has the right to shape the country’s legal systems as he sees fit.

“I’m allowed to be totally involved,” he told reporters as he left Washington on Tuesday for a trip to California, Nevada and Arizona. “I’m actually, I guess, the chief law enforcement officer of the country. But I’ve chosen not to be involved.”

The president’s post-impeachment behavior has alarmed Attorney General William P. Barr, who has told people close to the president that he is willing to quit unless Trump stops publicly commenting on ongoing criminal matters, according to two administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. It also has appalled several legal experts and former officials, who have said his direct intervention in legal matters risks further politicizing law enforcement at a time of fraying confidence in the Justice Department.

More than 2,000 former Justice Department employees signed a public letter this week objecting to Trump’s public intervention in the case of his longtime friend Roger Stone, and urging Barr to resign. The head of the Federal Judges Association has called an emergency meeting to address growing concerns about political interference in the Stone case. And four prosecutors resigned from the case last week after Trump publicly decried their recommended prison sentence of seven to nine years for Stone and the Justice Department reversed course to lobby for a lower sentence.

A jury convicted Stone last year of lying to Congress and obstruction in a case that Trump has repeatedly condemned as unfair while leaving open the prospect of issuing a pardon for his friend and political ally.

Well, I guess Trump learned his lesson after the Mueller Investigation detailed 10 counts of obstruction, and after he was impeached on two articles, following extensive, unambiguous evidence of gross corruption in acts that Trump committed against the United States.

Who knew Susan Collins would be so right!

At least it's kinda funny to see Barr publicly demeaned?

It will only be necessary to elect a Democrat to the Presidency and he can have the Senate Republicans jailed for obstruction of justice and replaced by people of his own choosing. Meanwhile the half of the country that still retains some sanity can stand by and laugh as they point to the hypocrites that have always maintained they were the party of personal responsibility and that people without any have to pay for that lack.

Barr done F'd up. He apparently thought he was going to come out of this with his reputation intact. None of his latest sweet talk appears to be working no matter how hard he sucked on ole Donald.

I’m sure our right leaning members will descend into this thread to express their dismay over this. That is if everyone weren’t so gosh darn mean to them.

I would not be shocked if 1 year from now your Country is in an open Civil War. Trump may refuse to accept Electoral defeat and these Republicans are quite likely unprincipled enough to support him. At that point only violence can preserve the Republic.

I honestly think that if Trump is not elected, GOP Congress will desperately try to prop him up those final months of power so that he can ramrod GOP fascism up this country's ass for as long as they think it will hold, then will immediately start tearing him and themselves apart--just like rats tearing at and eating each other to death when you asphyxiate them.

They tolerate Trump as long as he gives them power to rule, but will instantly turn to the rat fucking, then ask how the country ever got to this point...probably something the democrats did, obviously. Only the democrats would have let them ally with Trump.

Barr's reputation is intact. He's been known as a party hack lacking in all principle since being brought in as the cleaner under Bush I. Bill Barr is worse than Jeff Sessions.

Barr forgot the golden rule: Trump eventually tosses everyone under the bus. It's not a question of if you'll get screwed, it's when. Hell, he'd probably throw his own family to the wolves if he thought it'd save his skin. All it takes is the slightest sign that you won't do what he asks without question.

What's crazier is that Barr is doing Trump's biding. Trump just can't stand even a hint of push back, i.e. he's queering Barr's plays. Trump is a fucking dope. The Republican traitor congressman are even trying to get Trump to stop by really getting tough with him. Like " I wish he wouldn't do this" Too late traitors.

True, that. It's a lot harder with Trump because the man will just do any fucking thing he wants whenever he feels like it. It's not enough that Barr do his bidding but also that he must be seen as doing so on demand. It's like the old sight gag about mafia foreplay where the guy snaps his fingers over his head & snaps his wrist down to point at his crotch... just get on it, honey... that's why you're here.

The guy ticks all the boxes, when you want to bend justice towards single-party, single person rule.

Barr is how republics end, and the signs were terrible from the beginning of days.

It's difficult to fathom how it has come to a point where his behaviour is acceptable? Obviously they've recognized that all the propaganda; fox news, social media, conspiracy theories have been so effective that it is strictly a team sport now.

Nothing else matters, so what if he's a criminal, so what if democracy dies, so long as we're winning and believe the other side is mad about it.

It's not even politics in the national interest. No issues matter other than feeling like they can still kick sand in the other team's eye. Sad state of affairs. If he loses in November, how is it not going to be trouble. His whole base will 100% be on board with him trying to still stay in power, even after having lost. They -will- support him, and quite likely, so will elected Republicans.
