The 3,000 isn't just a number pulled out of the air, though it is a bit higher than this study's conclusion:

https://gwtoday.gwu.edu/gw-researchers-2975-excess-deaths-linked-hurricane-maria

Obviously, someone can read the study and disagree with it, but don't just discount the higher number because you think it's just flat-out guesswork.

Not to mention...if it was 1000 vs 3000, would that make it any better considering the douche is claiming fucking 17? How many orders of magnitude off are acceptable?

It’s not even that. He’s lying about how the numbers were arrived at. Saying if someone died of old age they threw them in. It’s just complete bullshit and the enablers and faithful just don’t care how much he lies to them.

Even Scott and DeSantis had to distance themselves from his remarks today, however quite gently, because they know how completely insulting the whole thing is to the entire PR community. Many of which settled in Florida and will be voting possibly.

Trump doesn't care about the truth. He just says things to make himself look good. When called on it, he denies that truth even exists.

The truth is that it was an enormous disaster that the GOP & the Trump admin underplayed as much as they could. All they want from Puerto Rico is for those people to STFU & leave them to cutting taxes for the Rich, running up the debt, stacking the SCOTUS & other really important stuff. This whole hurricane thing was highly inconvenient. Oh, and FYGM, Losers.

It was Puerto Rico's fault. Two flaws

0 electoral votes
Too many brown people

Hey don't forget about all that ocean! It's a lot of ocean!

I mean yeah we have the largest navy in the world, a coast guard, more airborne assets than anyone, the ability to attack anywhere on the globe in under 4hrs if suitably motivated, and agencies who already improved on the failures of Katrina under Obama - but hey! It's an island. Surrounded by ocean. A lot of ocean. Think about it.

Dipshit's comments are as biting as his indifference to PR suffering. That's some Dubya-like strategery right there. You think because they're not a state you don't have to worry? You know what Puerto Ricans get when they flee to the mainland? The right to vote. But I'm sure they'll be over this whole hurricane thing by 2020, right?

Trump cares less about the truth to the point where I can arguably submit that he is much more convincing when he lies as when on those rare occasions he actually blurts out the usual self-immolating truth.

Not only did those people not die from the hurricane, according to Trump, but the Democrats apparently came up with the numbers (not The George Washington University) just to make him look bad (as if he doesn't manage to do that without any help).

Trump tweet this morning:
"This was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico. If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list. Bad politics. I love Puerto Rico!"

What a crybaby snowflake.

The buck stops... somewhere. Just never with this lying shitbag.

trump doubled, tripled, and may have even quadrupled down tonight...

“When Trump visited the island territory last October, OFFICIALS told him in a briefing 16 PEOPLE had died from Maria.” The Washington Post. This was long AFTER the hurricane took place. Over many months it went to 64 PEOPLE. Then, like magic, “3000 PEOPLE KILLED.” They hired GWU Research to tell them how many people had died in Puerto Rico (how would they not know this?). This method was never done with previous hurricanes because other jurisdictions know how many people were killed. FIFTY TIMES LAST ORIGINAL NUMBER - NO WAY!"

also, trump will claim victory over Florence because there will be very few deaths.

i'd bet unlimited sums on that.

There will be fewer deaths not because of trump but rather despite trump. There are many good people working for various disaster relief agencies and they are good people when the agency is headed by a Democrat and they are good people when they are headed by a Republican.

without a doubt, but the vast majority of Carolinian's were able to easily evacuate to higher ground that had hotels and various houses in safety while the people of PR had no such option.

Trump Doubles Down On Puerto Rico Death Toll Claims Despite Backlash
CHANTAL DA SILVA SEPTEMBER 15, 2018

President Donald Trump doubled down on his statements questioning the nearly 3,000-person death toll in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria struck, asserting there was "no way" the number that could be that high on Friday.

Writing on Twitter, Trump explained how he had been told shortly after the storm struck that 16 people had died from Hurricane Maria before the death toll was updated to 64 people months later.

"Then, like magic, '3,000 PEOPLE KILLED," Trump said.

"They hired GWU Research to tell them how many people had died in Puerto Rico (how would they not know this?)," he continued.

"This method was never done with previous hurricanes because other jurisdictions know how many people were killed. FIFTY TIMES LAST ORIGINAL NUMBER - NO WAY!" he said.

The president made the comments despite having already received widespread backlash from across party lines over his claims on Thursday that "3,000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico."

The U.S. leader had claimed without any evidence that Democrats were behind the updated number in a bid to make him look "as bad as possible."

Researchers at George Washington University (GWU) issued a statement defending their work, which placed the death toll at nearly 3,000.

"We stand by the science underlying our study which found there were an estimated 2,975 excess deaths in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria," GWU's Milken Institute School of Public Health said in a statement obtained by NBC this week.

"We are confident that the number—2,975—is the most accurate and unbiased estimate of excess mortality to date," it said.

Researchers came to that figure by comparing estimates of typical non-disaster death rates over six months to the mortality rate seen in Puerto Rico six months after the storm.

Last month, Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló updated the government's official death toll for Hurricane Maria to match GWU's findings.

On Friday, the governor told Trump "there is no reason to underscore the tragedy we have suffered in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria."

Instead, he urged the president to "consider sending a message of support to show you stand with all of the US Citizens in Puerto Rico that lost loved ones. It would certainly be an act of respect and empathy."

I'm growing curious about the midterm election strategy of making basically everybody outside the 30% who like you already and are unshakable despise the very air you breathe.

Well, so far, five people have died in Hurricane Florence. I wonder if it's reached "success" status yet.

He calls everything he's done one of the best. Must be true. Been watching him on TV ever since The Apprentice. He's always right.

Actually, there were more people born during that hurricane in Puerto Rico than died. It was a good week. Oh, and disasters are good for the economy. Also, they are opportunities for the president to frame himself appropriately, what's not to like? There are always witch hunts, the Demos are poor losers. Good gosh.

Actually, I have never seen The Apprentice and I know that Trump's a fraud.

Five will be the official total, the rest is Democrat propaganda, game over. Great job, FEMA. I'm done, any further questions, Sarah will take them.

How is it a losing hand if the dumb !@#$s at Fox News let him get away with it?

When the faithful are drinking the kool-aid, they don't care what's in it.

Question for you. How many votes more do the Faithful get if they jiggle the handle at the voting booth :D

Seriously, nothing is going to change Trump's support, but who cares? Where it matter is with everyone else. This isn't politics, it's frigging crap and people get that. It likely increases turnout at midterms with nominal voters and Independents are polling against Trump more than before.

As you say with Fox and their ilk it won't matter but when it comes to election outcomes it may very well impact which party gains power and by how much.

FEMA director, who is also under investigation, went on TV today and tried to say that indirect deaths resulting from Maria in PR are materially different from direct deaths (wind, flooding, etc) and implied that counting them is somehow suspect.

Seems to be taking a page from the Scott Pruitt manual of political survival by excessively praising Trump every chance he gets.
