Truly bizarre problem with CD drive

Been a techie for YEARS, and thought I'd seen everything...until a few days ago.

I pressed the 'eject' button on my CD drive (actually, a DVD burner) and my computer blue screened! Not a Windows bluescreen, mind (well, actually, it is - not an OS fail, though)....it said "A hardware fault has been detected and the system has been halted"

I've since rebooted a few times and repeated the problem each time - *pushing* the eject button instantly causes a system lockup.

Now, when in windows, I can right-click on the CD drive and select 'eject' and it pops out fine. The drive's 'eject' button works fine them to close the drive again. If I then push it to 'eject' the disk (open it)....computer locks again!

Strangely, Dr. Watson isn't logging anything.

Thoughts?
