TruForm II? How is it?

I haven't heard anything about ATI's TruForm II technology, which was included in the Radeon 9700. Since I'm switching from a GeForce 3 to the Radeon 9800 Pro, I'd like more information about it. What has changed from TruForm I? Does it only work in games with support for it, or can it be used in any game, say, a Half-Life mod?

A brief search on Anandtech didn't turn up any detailed info on TruForm II... I took a look at Anandtech's original Radeon 9700 articles, they don't even mention that TruForm II was included... Does anyone have any information on it?

I'm hoping to enable TruForm in Natural-Selection (Half-Life mod).

Regards, Adam.

Half Life supports it I believe.

Being an nVidia guy I was pretty excited about this too when I got my 9700pro. I would say trueform is ok at times but nothing too exciting. It can also do some really stupid and "puffy" things at times.

Thanks for the resposne Smilin. Anybody tried TruForm II with Natural-Selection? If so, can you post some screenshots?

TruForm seemed a very promicing technology when it was first introduced with the 8500. It made older games look far better. Its a shame that not many games supported it, even via a patch, or if there was a way to force it on, in the drivers.

If HL supports it. Then so will any mod for HL. Cos its still the same base engine, just with different textures/maps/weapons/ect;

There was a very large thread on this in the Rage3D forums. I saw a lot of posts saying that Truform was much, much slower on Radeons after the 8500. A lot of people seemed to think it was a hardware issue.

Thats right. TruForm relies on the 2nd TMU in the pipelines on the 8500 cards to do the truform without slowdown. the 9000/9500/9500pro/9600/9600pro/9700/9700pro/9800/9800pro cards all only have one TMU per pipeline.
