many years ago I first heard about truespace and then it was considered much of a second grade 3d program, now I dont hear anything about it so I doubt it has improved

go for lightwave, maya or xsi if you can instead

But the thing is, it's free . . . I have trouble paying for groceries (in fact, paying for the magazine which bundles the CD is going to be troublesome) let alone for "industry leaders" in 3D animation . . ..

BTW, this is not the current version. I think the current version is 6.6 or something similar.

If it's free you should get it.
I've played with TrueSpace 3.2 and it's pretty nice. Funky user interface but easy to use.
I had some problems with it when adding to shapes together, the resulting shape had errors so it didn't render properly.

Yeah Lightwave is by far the industry leader.

Nope, it's become an industry standard for 3d lighting and model design, that and VT.

...... no, industry standard is max, maya, xsi and up and coming zbrush soon

That's fully 3D modelled, other than the thought balloon (if that wasn't clear already) ;)

So did you actually pay for your copy? I don't mean that as in "I'm accusing you of being a pirate" sort (If anything, I . . . .well, ARRRRR), but just curious . . ..

Yeah, my trueSpace history begins with my Cyrix PR166 refurb  that I bought at the local Egghead store. I bought trueSpace 2 out of their bargain bin for $20 :) and eventually bought a version upgrade from trueSpace 2 to trueSpace 4.2 (and then they patched it to 4.3). So I'm properly licensed.

I've thought about moving up to the later versions, but as a mere casual doodler, I haven't been able to justify it yet. If I had lots of money I'd consider 3DSMax or Lightwave, but I don't.

What do you think about it? I've just been playing around with 3.2 so far.

It's like the Ford Pinto, you never know when it'll blow up on you :Q I'll save a scene like the "donuts" scene there, and re-open it, and my IK model will look like there was a very bad malfunction of the Star Trek transporter :Q

I guess if they're giving it away for the price of a magazine anymore, then find that magazine :D and see what you think of it. I used to have trueSpace 3/SE and I wish I could give you a feature comparison, but it was a long time ago (plus that was the limited "SE" version).

Just got it and installed it on my comp: if anyone's interested, it's included with a british magazine called "3D World" (Issue #61) - you have to register the program, though. :(
