TrueCrypt down for the count? Or a false alarm?

Just bringing this to the attention of the folks reading the Security board here.

Earlier today, truecrypt.org and the truecrypt sourceforce website started redirecting to pages saying that it is not secure, that development on the product has ceased, and that people should migrate to other encryption products immediately. Also, a new build (7.2) was released at the same time.

There are a lot of potential angles to this right now, and it's unclear whether the truecrypt team's accounts have been compromised and this is a hoax, or if they're really calling it quits and not disclosing why. The Truecrypt Dev team being anonymous (as they always have been) doesn't help matters, as there isn't much of a way to get an "official" word on where things stand.

There has been word that this is not known to be directly related to anything discovered during the ongoing TrueCrypt code audit.

If you pay attention to, or are involved in, the information security community, you'll see that the consensus right now is basically to wait and see how this plays out.

You can check out twitter or other sources for chatter about all the different theories on what is (read: might be) happening. Personally, I'm not counting anything out at this point.

Mods can combine this with the thread from "Ken g6" below. Looks like we were posting at the same time.
