Car & Driver article on the city
More information

The summary: this little village is run by a family clan where the city council members and mayors are not elected. The police is run by the same family and their revenue is from minor traffic tickets generated on a 1000 feet long road.

Its so bad that C&D wrote an article on it. Read the other link too.

Horrible.

Famous and ancient. I've known about New Rome since before I was driving. It's just an extreme example of most small towns.

I didn't even bother to check the links - I live near New Rome... in Columbus. It's a joke around here. Everyone avoids that city at all costs. There are practically more police than there are citizens. I think that everyone around here hates New Rome. It's terrible.

I think a few years ago Car and Driver did a story on a bunch of little towns whose sole income was from tickets. Shady business.

The real money comes from violations that elsewhere would likely merit a warning at most -- no front license plate ($55), driving a commercial vehicle without a commercial plate ($105), driving with headsets ($90), with a cracked windshield ($55), with a chipped taillight ($55), without a rearview mirror ($55), with tinted windows ($105), with dirt or anything obscuring a license plate ($55), without a seatbelt ($60), with loud mufflers ($55), driving too slowly ($90), backing up improperly ($90), making an "unsafe" lane change ($90), stopping past the stop line ($90), no backup lights ($55), a dim bulb over the license plate ($55), making a U-turn ($90), tailgating ($90), and on and on. Pity the unsuspecting kid who hitchhikes ($135).

Well, at least they are getting the ricers...

But seriously, that sucks

Gosh, I know a place in GA like that, its called Valdosta. Its not as bad as this place but wheneber any of my friends have passed through that place, they always get tickets.

Don't try selling this story to Hollywood. It has major believability problems.

Wow, they weren't kiddin...incredible that a place like this actually exists...

No, this story was about a bunch of towns like this... it was in the same issue where they tested some radar detectors and the like. I'm not even positive that it was Car and Driver... it may have been Motortrend or some other magazine.

edit: I'm starting to remember a bit more from the article... it was about speed traps and the like, and in the article it described a bunch of small towns with little stretches of road that they used to make money. I think it also had a sidebar about a fellow who was suing because he considered speed traps to be a form of entrapment. I'm pretty sure that same issue had a comparo test of some radar detectors. The article was before 2000... good luck trying to find it. :)

After she tells him that he says "Oh I see where I made the mistake." After that he tells my sister that he should give her a ticket just for playing loud music. My sister says "Sir, would you look at my stereo?" The face of my sisters stereo wasnt even on so there was no way we could have even been listening to music.

Quoted from the link.

From the one site:

Without even thinking I jumped out of the car (which happens to be far from a hoopty- its a 2001 Honda Accord 2dr. driven by 2 adults old enough to be this kids dad) Look at the plate and was like "Hey you need to take another look at this were not expired until June." The retard cop, who looked like he was about to drop a load in his pants when hopped out (had his hand on his gun! trembling like Barney Fife used to LOL)
So the dumbass jumps out of the car and is surprised that the officer is nervous? He should have gotten hauled in for that. He's damn lucky.

"As I looked out in the lobby I noticed the New Rome officer sitting in the corner with a petrified look on his face. This officer observed another officer being assaulted and failed to assist in any way and was obviously shaken by the incident. I proceeded to ask this officer to leave our building, and informed him of my dissatisfaction of his cowardness."

Sounds par for the course for the New Rome PD.

I got pulled over once by a state trooper. When I reached into my pocket, he became "alert" and not at all nervous. All in all, he exuded confidence and competence.

Granted, the guy shouldn't have jumped out of his car like that, but it sounds like the NRPD deserves every bit of criticism.

One of the many reasons why this state is the one of the worst places to live in the US.

WOW! i hope the justice department does something.

to bad i missed the 20/20 show =(

the new mayor and the pople he appointed (the barber and the other lady) are pretty good people. Glad that the little town has some people with balls to stand up to them.

I am highly suspiscious of many of those stories. Personally, I subscribe to the "do nothing wrong and you'll be safe" theory. I love the one story about the woman who never paid the ticket and then got upset that they came after her. More than normal? Yes. More than necessary? No.

Just because a lot of laws aren't usually enforced does not mean that they can't be.

ZV

EDIT: I'm unsure of the veracity of the story from that other "officer". Even if it's true, a single officer is not a statistically valid sample.

There was a story a while back on one of the Columbus news channels where the people of New Rome (all 12 of them, or something like that) elected a mayor who was going to de-establish the NRPD. But... the council pulled some kind of BS and managed to keep it from happening.
