I'm just curious as to what your definition of Christmas is and do you think the current state of Christmas reflects this?

To the Repost Police: I did a search for "Christmas" and didn't see this topic. Cheers! :wine:;)

Christ's birthday, plain and simple, a time for loving thy fellow neighbor.

It has nothing to do with the following ;

Gift giving/receiving
Santa Claus
Pine trees
Ornaments
Delicious food
Alcohol

My friend (owner of a pr0n site) mentioned the number of sign-ups increased during the Holidays. Go figure? Also, at Costco this old grandma stole my shopping cart while I was getting something a few feet away. Who the fvck steals a shopping cart??? Does it seem like everyone has lost the true meaning of Christmas? This was where I was getting at.

Edit: my 4444th post!

It's really about replacing a holiday of those "evil evil pagans". It's generally accepted that christ wasn't born wasn't Dec 25th.

The original meaning of the season was to celebrate the fact that the length of the days will only increase (after the solstice of course). It was the Romans (Constantine?) who decided to celebrate the birth of christ during this time. Whether it was to convert pagans, steal their holiday, or just a random decision is up for debate (although the last doesn't seem likely).

interesting....

Crypticburn is right about the origination of Christmas. However, that having been done, here's what Christmas is supposed to be about and what it would mean to me if I celebrated it:

Etymology: "Cristes mæsse, literally, Christ's mass"

Ask yourself if that's what you believe in and practice. Personally, I don't do what I don't believe in. I sing the songs, especially when the media doesn't have it in your face. It's great to hear them in good spirit. This holiday is nice because there has been so little of the commercialisation.

Honestly, Bleeb, in regards to what inspired you to pose this question: Did you really think that Christmas still had its original meaning? It's been long secularised and commercialised. Who cares? Just recently, I heard on the news that some people objected to kids (choir) singing traditional Christmas songs of religious implications (i.e., anyone with Christ in it). Hello? Whoever is in charge, let us know if Christmas is really about Christ or if it's officially meaningless as it seems.

Thats where I was getting on with this post. I believe that Christmas has lost its meaning and value. A friend posed a question to me about buying gifts and presents for family, friends, etc. I said no because I didn't like what Christmas has become. I guess my little boycott of the "commericalism" that this capitalist society has done to something precious and meaningful as Christmas.

7 years ago, times were tuff on the farm and I returned to a full time job in addition to the farm. I became friends with a guy at the new job pretty quick. My wife and I just had 1 child then, and we were pretty hard up at CHRISTmas that year.

I confided to my buddy Mark that I felt really bad about Christmas that I didn't have enough extra funds to do it up right for the little guys first Christmas. That weekend, he and his wife showed up at our place with a huge tree, some new lights and ornaments and a big bag of wrapped toys for Jacob.

Of course I tried to refuse, but he said, "You gotta lot of rules about CHRISTmas man, don't be ruining mine by being a prick".

What Mark and Paula did for us that year I think defines Christmas for me if that makes any sense.
