4-30-2004 Truckers Block L.A. Freeway in Protest

LOS ANGELES - Independent truckers parked their rigs on a busy freeway outside Los Angeles on Friday morning, snarling rush-hour traffic for miles in a wildcat protest over high diesel prices. Other truckers rallied at two of the largest ports on the West Coast.

"We're here to fight. With a price like this, we can't survive," said Ramiro Alonso, 38.

The protests were part of a loosely organized effort around the state by independent truckers concerned about rapidly rising fuel costs and government fees.

The California Trucking Association said the price of diesel fuel has risen 36 cents in the past two weeks to as high as $2.50 a gallon in California ? 56 cents a gallon higher than the national average

The association, a trade group, has asked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to take steps to keep more of the diesel fuel refined in California in the state as a way to stabilize prices.

I'd have to say that these people are barking up the wrong tree and doing something really stupid. All their actions are doing is getting people to hate them and their actions. The "protest" won't solve anything and won't help anything. Supply and demand is at work here.

Besides, it's California, what did they think was going to happen? I have a couple of friends that are over the road drivers and they avoid California at all costs. It's about impossible to pick up a decent load that actually pays something. More often than not, many of the loads you can find, if you take them, will actually cause you a loss. The point I'm trying to make here, is that if a lot of truckers that aren't even from anywhere near the state know hauling stuff in California is lousy, why should that surprise ones that live in and around California?

Wow, what a wonderfully stupid way to protest. Inconvenience and piss-off commuters and citizens who have nothing to do with the the hike in oil prices.

Its like shooting into a crowd of people to protest gun violence.

Idiots.

This is just an extension of the shoremen strike. The unions are stirring an artificial slowdown.

I have a million and a half miles under my belt as an independant driver and I hung up my CDL long ago because of rising prices and frozen revenue. Mark my words, if this fuel price issue isn't resolved and fast, everything you see, eat, touch, feel, smell will cost you more IE: INFLATION because virtually everything you have was brought by a trucker one way or another. If these drivers are protesting, you better damn well listen. They are doing it not just for themselves, but for you and me too.

I spent one year as an independent driver and went broke doing it. . . you better listen to these guys. . . You can't keep raising fuel prices and not paying more to transport the load.

He's in Iraq now.

They are declaring a "Gas Emergency" in California.

What does this mean and what can they do about it with this "Emergency" declared???

Diesel also over $2 a gallon out there and heading towards $3 a gallon as well.

Does this mean all trucks will shut down and park em especially in California???

Why? Can't you pass the cost off to the consumer like any other business?

While I understand their plight...I agree with others that this was a boneheaded way to protest. They are just pissing off the people they want to support them...how is that suppose to work?

If all truck drivers just went on strike, that would likely get some attention. It is truely amazing how much stuff is transported via truck in this country. Even one day of strike would likely have a huge effect.

Now not only I'm pissed because of the gas prices keep going off, I've to contend with the freeways getting blocked because some moronic truckers decided to put camp there. Block the oil company headquarters or the governor mansion or someone else in power for crying out loud. Why would you pissed off ordinary people like me and expect us to take your plight????

2.50 for Diesel??! What the hell are you guys paying for gasoline?!

Someone mentioned passing on the costs . . . I think it's already happening. I may be mistaken but I would swear almost everything at the grocery store is getting more expensive. Granted, I know the dairy cartel is responsible for milk/cheese/ice cream.

I pay 2.83 for full serve Texaco premium. I welcome high gas prices as long as it's market determined because there are alternatives like bio diesel or even electric and hydrogen which can be generated pollution free if you don't mind a few nuke plants going online. Still hoping for $5-6 a gallon to get the nuts off the road.:)
