Trucker Says He Was Fired Over His Weight

There for a second I thought he might have been fired for being too skinny. From what I've seen a 412lb trucker isn't that unusual.

Not at all.

If he can't fit into the truck he's supposed to drive, then he can't do his job. If he can't do his job, he shouldn't work there.

Gives new meaning to the line in Dave Dudley's "Six Days On The Road:"

"I'm a little overweight, and my log book's way behind." :Q

I could see not getting hired, but this guy already worked there for how long?? I agree he was set up, someone didn't like him personally or they are going to try and weed out all bigger drivers.

it sort of sucks, but he is probably an extra 200-250lbs than his peers....that's extra gas, wear and tear, etc.

It's not a good reason to fire someone, and I am sure there is more to this story.

It isn't even that, he just couldnt fit into the smaller truck. I think it was a valid reason. Come on, over 400lbs? I couldn understand him being 350 or less, sure, but that is damn big.

OK, although I am fit and usually complain about stuff in this class, I'm going to go out on a limb and disagree with you all.

1) Read the article
2) he hasn't had an accident, and has had 12 safety awards to prove it
3) He has no problem driving his usual rig, it's just that they intentionally moved him to a smaller rig and set him up to be fired.

Yes, he is morbidly obese and should lose weight. but come on, if you were a truck driver for 30 years, wouldn't that high-stress, sitting-every-hour-of-the-day lifestyle get to you too? 400 is excessive, but I betcha the average truck driver is in the 250-300 range.

He has a good case against the company and should win.

Yep.

And beer, it doesn't matter. If he can't do his job with the company equipment that he is given, then he can't do his job and should be fired. If this guy wins his case, the corollary would be that morbidly obese people are a protected class and that larger seats on airplanes, buses, and movie theaters would have to be provided to accomodate them, and that would be be just the beginning in addition to larger office chairs, larger trucks for drivers. Hell, UPS would have to hire people who can't lift 70 lbs. The rest of us who work to keep ourselves in good health would have pay for all these amenities to the fat lazy slobs and I just can't agree with that.

It is time to stop rewarding people for poor or self-destructive behavior. I'm not saying they should be punished, simply not rewarded. Once, letting yourself become morbidly obese was something to be ashamed about. Now it's almost something to be proud of... and that spells bad things for our society.

Weight is a serious issue with trucking companies though. My friend works for Alcoa and he designs wheels, well the rims that the tires go on. Anyways they designed a wheel that is 17lbs. lighter than conventional wheels. Well it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how great that is. 17 lbs. per wheel times 18 wheels = 306 more lbs. of widgets said trucking company can now ship on each truck. So I can easily see why they fired a 412 lbs. driver. He's costing them storage. Now I don't think its fair and I don't think we deserved to be fired but if he can't do the job then he CAN'T do the job.

what if you were first given an a64 with a gig of pc3200. told to do photoshop work.
then they decide they want to take that from you and give you a 386 and expect you to do the same work
should you be fired then?

You do realize that the gross wieght on a truck can exceed 80,000 lbs, right?

400/80000 = .5%, wow, such a significant difference?

The difference between 200 and 400 is .25%, yea, that's exceeding engineering tolerenaces alright?

I can't believe you actually posted this as a valid reason. Stupidest...argument...ever.

That logic is so full of holes it is funny. Imagine you dig trenches for a living. You use a backhoe for 20 years, and then I tell you to do the same thing in the same time with a shovel. If you were in shape, it could be done! But look, you can't do it...you're fired.

And it's a moot point. Weight is considered a disability under the ADA IIRC, and this will be a quick court case. It's clearly entrapment.

Keeping your flawed analogy true to this real life case, if the rest of the employees could easily do the same work just as fast with the 386, and I could not, then YES.

The other drivers can drive the smaller truck just fine, probably without even dropping a minute off their schedules.
