Truck with a manual

I'm think of finally replacing my 2000 Xterra. I would like to get another truck. The problem is I still like to to shift my own gears. That narrows down the field a lot. I'm also leaning toward a smaller truck thought the "smaller" truck are not so small anymore.

So far the front runner is the Toyota Tacoma. Keep flipping between the extended cab and the double cab.

I've also looked at the newer Xterra and the Frontier. I'm not crazy about the styling of either and the interior of the Tacoma is nicer.

Are there any other trucks that come with a manual?

The Frontier is the only one I would consider. A PRO-4X 4WD 6-speed would be nice.

The Ranger does but it's outdated, unsafe, and inefficient for its size.

The Colorado/Canyon also come with manuals. They're not that safe either.

Edit: Oops... the Frontier is "marginal" too. Only the Tacoma scores well.

OP, I have owned the Hardbody (1995) and the Frontier (2004) when the Hardbody was totaled. Both were manuals and I would never trade them for an auto ... ever. I considered a Tacoma back in 2004 but Toyota wouldn't negotiate. Walked across the street to the Nissan dealership and was able to get a killer OTD price WITHOUT negotiating.

Other than a near antique Lexus I would never deal with Toyota ... they think they are all that ... and they are not.

Good luck finding a truck with a manual transmission. Back in 2004 only 9.5% of all vehicles sold in the US were manual. It's probably worse now ...

Yes, many Toyota dealers thought they were the answer to everything and behaved accordingly. However, since the recall after recall after recall brought them back to Earth, I find that they are a little less arrogant and more willing to deal nowadays. Look at their sales numbers/market share today. They have to do something to get back in the game.

I'm also casually looking for a replacement to my 1997 Ranger which is starting to get eaten by the tin worm and has high miles.

I'm not sure if the Op is looking for new or used.

In the used market I've seen the following with manuals:

Ford Ranger
Toyota Tacoma
Nissan Frontier
Ford F150
Chevy Silverado
Dodge Dakota

It's rare to find the full size Silverado and F150 with manuals, but they do exist.

An easy way to search for vehicles for sale in your area is to go to Cars.com, which will let you narrow down your search to body style and transmission type, along with a slew of other options.

FWIW, I've owned my Ranger for 12 years. It's a manual with a 2.3L engine. It's reliable and can get 26mpg if I'm not too heavy on the throttle.

2011 is the last year that Ford will be making the Ranger.
