Truck suspension question

Just noticed this while driving around yesterday...

Seems like every truck I follow complies with this observation: One of the rear struts is routed in FRONT of the rear axle; the strut on the opposite side is routed BEHIND the rear axle. WHY?!?!?? This pisses me off! Why can't they put both struts either in front of, or behind, the axle? This just looks odd and the assymetrical appearance is making my sense of logic DIAF. What is different about one side of the truck vs. the other that requires this??

A strut is a shock and coil spring assembly, what you are seeing is just a shock, the reason behind the alternting shock mount method is to reduce wheel hop and axle twisting during acceleration.
