Truck remote data

I hope this is the place for an answer to my question!!!

A friend and I have a competition "Pulling Truck" with the capability of collecting data to a laptop, such as: engine RPM, wheel speed, exhaust temp, etc.

The measured data is collected by a "black box" and linked to the laptop via USB cable. Commercially purchased software manipulates the data.

My question is this (take it easy... I'm basically a wrench turner): Is there a way the USB output of the "black box" could be run to a wireless network device (router?) so I could capture the data on the laptop outside the truck (wirelessly)? A full pull is only 300 feet, so range should not be a big problem. I was thinking of maybe using something similar to the USB printer device used on my wireless home network. The laptop has a "G" wireless card in it.

Whatchathink?

I really really doubt theres anything out there but I'm interested to see if anyone has an practical ideas. Why do you need the data when the pull is going on? Is someone trying to get info to the driver while the pull is occurring?

the USB cable needs to be connected to a computer with an installed application, I think. Therefore, installing a second computer in the truck and networking it to your laptop is the only real choice.

I was hoping to keep the laptop out of the truck for various reasons, but it doesn't look like that can happen.

Thanks for the assistance.
