Troublesome fan (8800GTS)

This has been bothering me for a while now, and I figure it's time to get this cleared up. The fan on my 8800GTS seems permanently stuck on low speed except for three cases:

- immediately after POST, it's at full speed (after the display comes up though, it ramps back down)
- with no drivers installed, it's always at full speed
- manually RivaTuning it

I've read a few things elsewhere that seems to indicate there might be a driver issue. Is this true? Not worth worrying about if there are no stability issues?

I would not worry about it if you don't experience any stability issues.

But at the same time, to eliminate any potentially negative "long term effects", I would "speed-up" the fan with Riva Tuner while playing games, to keep the temperature around 75C.

I have a 8800 gt card and exactly the same problem, the fan is stuck at 29% in idle and in full load to. I'm using riva tuner and set it to 75% when the temperature of the gpu exceeds 60 C, but it does like a hair drier. If your full load temperature is bellow 80 C then you shouldn't really worry, but if it gets higher than that, speed up the fan.

These days, it's not too much of a concern I guess. Right now, just surfing the net, NV monitor shows 46 C. From a screenshot I posted a few days in a UT3 thread, it seems to be around 58 C.

It's probably be more of an issue during the summer. I don't recall any stability issues during the summer either, but the temps were definitely a bit higher, and I'd rather not reduce the life of the card. Sounds like setting a RivaTuner fan profile might be a good option.
