Hello all.

I bought my new LG DVD-ReWriter GSA H22L a few weeks ago and everytime I try and write stuff to a blank DVD RW Nero fails at random places. Like it might fail at 55% complete, or 3% complete, or 22% complete. Its only when im writing large amounts of files (GBs). If I write small amounts its ok.

I have to dispatch this computer tomorrow becuase its sold on eBay and I need to backup my files for when my new parts arrive on wednesday.

Does anyone know why it is doing this? Help much appreciated.

PS: I have a LitEON DVD-ROM drive on the same IDE channel.

Disable the file indexing function in XP (it's a service) - and anything scheduled or that accesses the Hard Disk automatically. And if you play music CDs (factory pressings) on your PC, then you may have the Sony/BMG rootkit. It is known to screw with and even physically damage DVD burners and other optical drives.

Here's the link to the Sony/BMG title list: http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/titles.html
Here's a link to the rootkit removal tool: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4912

You can get free replacements for any of your audio CDs that have the rootkit software on them - go to the home page of the site where the titles list is for the details of the class-action settlement.

And if your other optical drive has a significantly slower interface (PIO or DMA-2) than the burner (ATA-66 ?), disconnect it while doing your backing up.

PS: And if the DVD burner has a ATA-66 or higher interface, be sure it's on an 80-wire cable.

And you could install Adaptec's ASPI layer software - I know it says it's for SCSI but it often helps optical drives work better as well as other add-on controllers (like SiliconImage based IDE/RAID cards). It comes with a utility to check and see if there is currently ASPI software installed and what version it is (named aspichk.exe) - run that before installing. It seldom, if ever, harms operation at all.
