Troubleshooting Slow 98SE

Here is my aunt's computer

Dell Dimension
566 Celeron
128 MB Memory
7 GB Hard Drive - about 3.5 of it used

We did a clean install over the summer because my cousin downloaded a nice virus. Over the past few days its slowed down significantly. Its been defragmented in the past 15 days or so, so that can't be a problem. She did say my cousin uninstalled a bunch of programs and it sped up for a couple of days but it slowed down again.

So - How do you edit the start up programs in 98SE? I've used 2K and now XP for so long I don't remember where to go for this. It sounds like they have a bunch of un-needed programs loading at start-up.

Is there anything else I could do to make it run faster?

My cousin has for some reason decided to leave a parallel port 4X CD-RW on constantly, having the software load at startup and run even though she burns something maybe once a week if that. Would it be advisable / increase speed if it is only attached it when needed?

I'm thinking I should just up their memory and install XP the next time I'm down there but for now if there is any way to speed 98SE I would GREATLY appreciate the help.

Thanks!

MSCONFIG will get you where you want to go. Another option that gives you a little more control is to download a small utility called Startup Control Panel 2.6, avalable here.

Some of the tweaks in this article should help some.

Hope this helps.
