Troubleshooting random poor internet speeds, looking for advice!

I have done the easy stuff...reboot the modem, bypass the router to attempt to rule out issues with my own hardware.

Called tech support to have things reviewed from their end (waste of time).

I am suspecting it is just saturation for a lack of a better term during peak usage hours because the only time I notice it is in the evenings.

For instance, routinely I can test the speed during the day and the download speed maxes out at 15 mbps...but as I type this my speed barely gets over 2 mbps and this pattern has been like this for the last couple of weeks.

I have a tech coming tomorrow to review (probably another waste of time).

I have tried to document the times and of the speedtests and the results. I am wondering if anyone could give me additional tests to run just to see if I can find any other possible causes.

Thanks!

If it consistently happens at the same time of day (in the evening) then it is most likely a result of the ISP overselling the available bandwidth on the network.

I went through this when I first moved in to this residence...

I went through a month of this BS, going back and forth about nothing being wrong and poor speeds.

Eventually it was slipped they had a 'saturation problem' and that they had to 'split a node' to help.

I am thinking it is the same deal but as usual, when I inquired the Lvl 1 tech didn't admit to anything.

Hope to see if anything useful comes of the visit tomorrow outside of the normal BS where the tech comes into the house and says the setup is all wrong (when it was a previous tech that set it up) and subsequently changes everything...with no changes (like the previous adventure 2 years prior).

For the same reason an ISP in Denmark has to disclose a minimum guarantied speed. I have a 50/5 line with 40/5 minimum.

I'm sort of having the same problem... I've been getting slow download speeds with my wifi-connected desktop, but full speed with my LAN connected HTPC.

Are you working over wifi, or LAN?

+1. i use to have the same problem

Agree. I suspect that you have cable since they referred to node splitting. Most likely your local DOCSIS (cable) network is overloaded. There's nothing you can do about that other than bitch at the ISP until they upgrade.

It is a LAN connection, but the same speeds over wifi as well.
